This was the exact book I needed for my course, but $25 cheaper than at my school bookstore. It's a series of mini-books held together in a case. We bring one book to class at a time, according to what chapter we're on, and it's great because it takes up less space in the backpack & is lighter.

Influence: Science and Practice (5th Edition) Review

Influence: Science and Practice (5th Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Right away, buyers should know that Cialdini has produced a less-expensive version of this book. "Influence: Science and Practice" is designed as a textbook for classroom instruction. So, it has things like chapter summaries and questions that can be assigned as homework. However, the other book "Influence: the psychology of persuasion," is designed for a more general audience. The content is basically the same, but it omits the classroom-oriented layout. It's also cheaper. If you are a student who is buying textbooks online, this is probably what you (or rather, your professors) want. If not, get the other one.
Both books focus on persuasive tactics. This is not a theoretical work trying to lay out a strategy of communication, like "Getting to Yes." This is a toolkit, designed to give the reader a selection of tools for specific circumstances. That is not to say that Cialdini lacks an understanding of more strategic thinking, just that it isn't the focus here.
The underlying theory is that people tend to be hardwired to respond to certain stimuli in predictable ways. The book tells you what those stimuli are, that is, how to push people's buttons. And it does a very good job, which is why Cialdini has demand for two versions of the same book.
I'm not going to list all of the tactics because the table of contents does that and, because they're detailed, they're difficult to understand without reading the book. But, they all have some basis in science and their effectiveness is empirically demonstrable, so you can trust that they work. The best part of this book, for me, was becoming more conscious of how others, including politicians, advertisers, and bosses, try to manipulate me. Cialdini deserves respect just for opening people's eyes, but he goes a step further by explaining ways to deal with the constant manipulation that is inherent in human communication.
The only problems I see are that the textbook version (this one) has a better index in the editions I compared, so it makes a better reference tool and that the book is written from an American cultural perspective. That's fine, as most of his audience is American, but, and this is my M.A. in Int'l Relations talking, I wonder how well some of these tactics would be recieved by people from other cultural backgrounds. In particular, notions of authority (which constitute a chapter) vary widely. Just a heads up. This is still a "must read" for people who want to know how to persuade or protect themselves against other's persuasion.

Influence: Science and Practice is an examination of the psychology of compliance (i.e. uncovering which factors cause a person to say "yes" to another's request). Written in a narrative style combined with scholarly research, Cialdini combines evidence from experimental work with the techniques and strategies he gathered while working as a salesperson, fundraiser, advertiser, and in other positions inside organizations that commonly use compliance tactics to get us to say "yes." Widely used in classes, as well as sold to people operating successfully in the business world, the eagerly awaited revision of Influence reminds the reader of the power of persuasion.Cialdini organizes compliance techniques into six categories based on psychological principles that direct human behavior: reciprocation, consistency, social proof, liking, authority, and scarcity.

Psychology Student Writer's Manual, The (2nd Edition)
Average Reviews:

Part of the writing process can be controlled and part cannot: writing feeds on enough time and good work habits. THE PSYCHOLOGY STUDENT WRITER'S MANUAL describes writing as a creative process in need of planning: finding an argument that will keep a discussion going all the way to more than one possible conclusion; fitting in source materials from the Internet and the library; fixing the usual grammar and style mistakes; and following APA style format and source citation. Jill M. Scott et al not only cover psychological correlation, description and experimentation paper writing but also handle genograms, which they clearly explain and illustrate, and professional ethics. The book helps writers in all fields and is every bit as well organized and written as Christopher Thaiss and James F. Sanford's WRITING FOR PSYCHOLOGY.

It is a good book with clear illustration of the statistics. It begin with simple statistics and then move on to more difficult analysis. Before I get this book, whenever I pick up a book about statistics, I feel fate. Then I close it immediately after reading 1 to 2 pages, and never pick it up again. However, for this particular book, I've read more than half (about 300 pages)and still want to finish it. After you've read one page, you are eager to read another and another. So, I highly recommend this book to undergradaute and postgraduate students.

I am not the sharpest leaf on the tree and had been out of college for more than ten years before picking up this book. The book is organized well and the information is easily understood. Each chapter begins with Learning Objectives, 3 Good reasons why you should care, and Making the case for organizational behavior that introduces the material in the chapter with describing a real organization. If you are serious about your education and want to learn something this book is designed exactly for that. The book has a free companion website for the student and an online instructor resource. The paperback is durable and the book easily fits into one hand. I am using this book for an online course and it is constantly being shoved in and out of my work bag and has held up well. Pleased with purchase.

Real Science. Real Life. Presents a balanced Scientist - Practitioner - Educator approach to understanding Abnormal Psychology.Several features distinguish this text from othertextbooks currently available. First, the base of abnormal psychology rests on knowledge generated through scientific studies and clinical practice. This text emphasizes this rich blend throughout. Second, it is increasingly clear that most forms of adult abnormal behavior either begin in childhood or have childhood precursors. This text highlights what is known about the developmental trajectory of each condition. Such a focusis instrumental in helping students gain some insight into the etiology of maladaptive conditions. Third,Beidel integrates biological findings with findings from social and behavioral sciences to foster the perspective that abnormal behavior is complex and subject to many different forces, and highlight how these variables often interact in a reciprocal fashion. Fourth, scientific findings with respect to race and genderare discussed with respect to each condition. This includes a discussion of prevalence, differences in symptom manifestation, and any known etiological differences. Importantly, an effortis made to "bring to life" the nature of these conditions by providing vivid clinical descriptions. In addition to short descriptions used liberally throughout each chapter, a fully integrated case studyis presented at the end of each chapter, again illustrating the interplay of biological, psychosocial and emotional factors. MyPsychLab contains study tools such as flashcards, self tests, videos, as well as Speaking Out: DSM in Context which tiesreal patient interview videos to specific content from the DSM-IV, helping students understand how the DSM-IV criteria applies to real people experiencing disorders. The Psychology Major: Career Options and Strategies for Success (4th Edition)

(More customer reviews)
I just changed my major to psychology at the end of last spring. My program requires a Career Planning course for psychology, this is my first semester of junior year. The course partnered with this book was a nice intervention. This is not a huge book, one could probably read it in one sitting. There is a lot of useful information about fields in psychology, graduate admissions, and multiple chapters on areas of undergraduate involvement that will make for a competitive student applying to grad school or for getting the most out of your undergrad experience in general. I liked the chapter on APA format, it is laid out very nicely. I have been raised in MLA format since frashman year in highschool, so has not been the easiest transition. I hear a lot of "students need to be doing x, y, z" to get into grad school, this book puts these things in perspective. I have followed a lot of the advice given in this book, like becoming involved with research, and I am getting more out of my classes and achieving better grades.

This is a great sociological book. It looks at current issues in a sociological perspective. I found it to be informative and enjoyable as sociology student. However this book would be great for the general public. I have only read some of the articles but I found it to be very balanced by providing the pros and cons of every argument. The only reason I don't give this book five stars is because I haven't read all the articles yet. A sure buy.

This volume lets readers realize for themselves that a "sociological imagination" can help them understand the burning questions of today's society, and that this kind of thinking is within their grasp. It illustrates how understanding society means engaging with its issues. The book consists of a series of debates in which multiple sides of today's hottest topics are examined: Is the environment improving? Is religion dead? Do poor people create their own poverty? Should marijuana be legalized? Is ethnic nationalism destructive? Revealing how much sociology has to contribute to our understanding of these topics, it encourages readers to Think Twice...then think again. The essays and debates presented here examine the issues surrounding the individual and society, social differences, social institutions and social change. For anyone interested in a balanced view of many of the most crucial issues and dilemmas in our society and our earth.

Counseling Sexual and Gender Minorities

This is an excellent book, one that will be valuable for many programs including psychology, counselling, social work, public health. However, it will also be a valuable resource for non-academic settings.
The author's careful consideration of learning exercises for students enhances each chapter's content. Of particular importance is the emphasis on the transgender community which is a group often overlooked.
I strongly endorse this book.

A practical, accessible, and comprehensive resource on counseling sexual and gender minorities, this text offers readers broad and inclusive coverage of current theory, research, and counseling applications for use with sexual and gender minority clients. With an emphasis on applying theory to practice, the book contains experimental learning activities, practical resources, current strategies, and interdisciplinary insights, making this text a vital resource for those students seeking complete training in gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered counseling issues. Since one of the most essential areas for counselors to focus on is understanding the helping professional as "person," Counseling Sexual and Gender Minorities includes a chapter devoted solely to stimulating students to explore their own beliefs, and attitudes towards sexual and gender minorities. In addition, personal exploration exercises throughout the book develop and facilitate this internal investigation and aid readers in recognizing their own fears or phobias and the barriers that people commonly experience in terms of counseling sexual and gender minorities. In addition, author Lynne Carroll explores ways that the unique intersections of race, ethnicity, religion, disability and socioeconomic status shape gender and sexual minorities. Specifically, this text includes coverage of issues related to sexual health and employment and workplace discrimination and the role of helping professionals as advocates for sexual and gender minorities.
