Sociology for Music Teachers: Perspectives for Practice Review

Sociology for Music Teachers: Perspectives for Practice
Average Reviews:

Are you a musician or a music teacher who wonders how music and music education fit into the grand scheme of society? If you've questioned your traditions and practices, then this is the book for you. Having read other's attempts to put forth a philosophy of music education and felt as if it went no where, I can tell you that the ideas in this little book are not circular. They make sense. Froehlich cites a number of writers Marx, Weber, Adorno, Blacking and Small, to name a few. Readers will find this book especially challenging if they have been teaching music to others with the purpose of perpetuating time-honored traditions of "classical" styles. This author builds a good case for including different genres of world music in school curricula for the purpose of "building bridges."

Outlining the basic aspects, constructs and concepts relevant to understanding music teaching and learning from a sociological perspective, this volume introduces readers to the discipline as a tool in understanding their own work. The volume shows how certain academics in music, sociology and education have thought about the relationship of music to education, schooling and society and examines the consequences of such thinking for making instructional choices in teaching methods and repertoire selection. The authors examine the question of why look at music education from a sociological perspective, and look at sociological concepts relevant to music education, texts in the sociology of music and their relevance for music education, and thoughts of selected ethno-musicologists, music sociologists, and cultural theorists, as well as providing an introduction to major sociology of education theories, the applications of important constructs in the sociology of education, basic aspects of occupational socialization, issues of identity construction for music professionals and implications for the sociologically informed music teacher. For music educators and musicians.

Guide to Managerial Communication (Guide to Business Communication Series) (8th Edition) Review

Guide to Managerial Communication (Guide to Business Communication Series) (8th Edition)

I picked this book up for a required Communications course in my MBA program. Prior to going back to school, I spent about 10 years in the workforce. So, when I opened this book, I was able to relate a lot of what I read to what I learned "on the job". That said, I recognize this book as a well-rounded and very detailed "communications manual". Some may say that a lot of the content is obvious, but what I say to them is that it may be obvious because they learned from experience. For others, it may not be quite so obvious; e.g., what to wear for television interviews. That said, this book is to the point and cuts out the fat; what a dictionary is for words is what this book is for communications approaches.

Managing Behavior in Organizations: Science in Service to Practice (Prentice Hall Essence of Management Series) Review

Managing Behavior in Organizations: Science in Service to Practice (Prentice Hall Essence of Management Series)
Average Reviews:

I am not the sharpest leaf on the tree and had been out of college for more than ten years before picking up this book. The book is organized well and the information is easily understood. Each chapter begins with Learning Objectives, 3 Good reasons why you should care, and Making the case for organizational behavior that introduces the material in the chapter with describing a real organization. If you are serious about your education and want to learn something this book is designed exactly for that. The book has a free companion website for the student and an online instructor resource. The paperback is durable and the book easily fits into one hand. I am using this book for an online course and it is constantly being shoved in and out of my work bag and has held up well. Pleased with purchase.

Real Science. Real Life. Presents a balanced Scientist - Practitioner - Educator approach to understanding Abnormal Psychology.Several features distinguish this text from othertextbooks currently available. First, the base of abnormal psychology rests on knowledge generated through scientific studies and clinical practice. This text emphasizes this rich blend throughout. Second, it is increasingly clear that most forms of adult abnormal behavior either begin in childhood or have childhood precursors. This text highlights what is known about the developmental trajectory of each condition. Such a focusis instrumental in helping students gain some insight into the etiology of maladaptive conditions. Third,Beidel integrates biological findings with findings from social and behavioral sciences to foster the perspective that abnormal behavior is complex and subject to many different forces, and highlight how these variables often interact in a reciprocal fashion. Fourth, scientific findings with respect to race and genderare discussed with respect to each condition. This includes a discussion of prevalence, differences in symptom manifestation, and any known etiological differences. Importantly, an effortis made to "bring to life" the nature of these conditions by providing vivid clinical descriptions. In addition to short descriptions used liberally throughout each chapter, a fully integrated case studyis presented at the end of each chapter, again illustrating the interplay of biological, psychosocial and emotional factors. MyPsychLab contains study tools such as flashcards, self tests, videos, as well as Speaking Out: DSM in Context which tiesreal patient interview videos to specific content from the DSM-IV, helping students understand how the DSM-IV criteria applies to real people experiencing disorders. The Psychology Major: Career Options and Strategies for Success (4th Edition) Review

The Psychology Major: Career Options and Strategies for Success (4th Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just changed my major to psychology at the end of last spring. My program requires a Career Planning course for psychology, this is my first semester of junior year. The course partnered with this book was a nice intervention. This is not a huge book, one could probably read it in one sitting. There is a lot of useful information about fields in psychology, graduate admissions, and multiple chapters on areas of undergraduate involvement that will make for a competitive student applying to grad school or for getting the most out of your undergrad experience in general. I liked the chapter on APA format, it is laid out very nicely. I have been raised in MLA format since frashman year in highschool, so has not been the easiest transition. I hear a lot of "students need to be doing x, y, z" to get into grad school, this book puts these things in perspective. I have followed a lot of the advice given in this book, like becoming involved with research, and I am getting more out of my classes and achieving better grades.

Counseling Sexual and Gender Minorities Review

Counseling Sexual and Gender Minorities
Average Reviews:

This is an excellent book, one that will be valuable for many programs including psychology, counselling, social work, public health. However, it will also be a valuable resource for non-academic settings.
The author's careful consideration of learning exercises for students enhances each chapter's content. Of particular importance is the emphasis on the transgender community which is a group often overlooked.
I strongly endorse this book.

A practical, accessible, and comprehensive resource on counseling sexual and gender minorities, this text offers readers broad and inclusive coverage of current theory, research, and counseling applications for use with sexual and gender minority clients. With an emphasis on applying theory to practice, the book contains experimental learning activities, practical resources, current strategies, and interdisciplinary insights, making this text a vital resource for those students seeking complete training in gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered counseling issues. Since one of the most essential areas for counselors to focus on is understanding the helping professional as "person," Counseling Sexual and Gender Minorities includes a chapter devoted solely to stimulating students to explore their own beliefs, and attitudes towards sexual and gender minorities. In addition, personal exploration exercises throughout the book develop and facilitate this internal investigation and aid readers in recognizing their own fears or phobias and the barriers that people commonly experience in terms of counseling sexual and gender minorities. In addition, author Lynne Carroll explores ways that the unique intersections of race, ethnicity, religion, disability and socioeconomic status shape gender and sexual minorities. Specifically, this text includes coverage of issues related to sexual health and employment and workplace discrimination and the role of helping professionals as advocates for sexual and gender minorities.
