This is an excellent book, one that will be valuable for many programs including psychology, counselling, social work, public health. However, it will also be a valuable resource for non-academic settings.
The author's careful consideration of learning exercises for students enhances each chapter's content. Of particular importance is the emphasis on the transgender community which is a group often overlooked.
I strongly endorse this book.

A practical, accessible, and comprehensive resource on counseling sexual and gender minorities, this text offers readers broad and inclusive coverage of current theory, research, and counseling applications for use with sexual and gender minority clients. With an emphasis on applying theory to practice, the book contains experimental learning activities, practical resources, current strategies, and interdisciplinary insights, making this text a vital resource for those students seeking complete training in gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered counseling issues. Since one of the most essential areas for counselors to focus on is understanding the helping professional as "person," Counseling Sexual and Gender Minorities includes a chapter devoted solely to stimulating students to explore their own beliefs, and attitudes towards sexual and gender minorities. In addition, personal exploration exercises throughout the book develop and facilitate this internal investigation and aid readers in recognizing their own fears or phobias and the barriers that people commonly experience in terms of counseling sexual and gender minorities. In addition, author Lynne Carroll explores ways that the unique intersections of race, ethnicity, religion, disability and socioeconomic status shape gender and sexual minorities. Specifically, this text includes coverage of issues related to sexual health and employment and workplace discrimination and the role of helping professionals as advocates for sexual and gender minorities.

The real power of this book is found in the first article written by the editor. She outlines each of the three primary perspectives on the family and politics by stating the reasons why the family is in crisis, what the consequnces of the factors on the family, and what this political perspective indicates are the public policy solutions. The book has "readings" from each point of view on issues of interest like abortion, crime, etc. The reading are very enlighting and useful. I gave it four stars because she only provides one reading for the liberal/feminist perspective. I do believe they somewhat different and should get a "reading" each. Thanks to the author for her hard work. My students in family studies love it. It is a real eye openner to the issues of politics and family.

This unique anthology contains readings that represent three major perspectives--conservative, centrist, liberal/feminist--on 16 important and controversial marriage and family-related topics. Section introductions put the articles in context and "critical thinking" questions challenge the authors' theoretical position, usage of data, consistency, etc. --helping readers to sort intelligently through the issues and perspectives and to develop informed opinions. Contains articles from several political and ideological positions on such topics as family values, gender roles, cohabitation, parenting, divorce, and stepfamilies. Features two original, theoretical chapters that characterize the "family wars" and their consequences in everyday life. For anyone interested in marriage/family issues from a variety of perspectives.
