Varieties of Unbelief: From Epicurus to Sartre Review

Varieties of Unbelief: From Epicurus to Sartre

Believers as well as skeptics would profit from a reading of this fine anthology. Besides reprinting hard-to-find shorter items such as Shelley's essay "A Refutation of Deism", the editor has skillfully excerpted passages from longer works. Each selection is introduced by a brief essay providing biographical information about its' author, and a deft summary of the ideas expressed. Besides the necessary inclusion of representative works from Greek and Roman Epicurians, 18th century 'philosophes', and such philosophers as Hume, Nietzsche, Russell, and Sartre; the editor also adds works from now-obscure but important early figures such as Anthony Collins and Elihu Palmer.
My only disappointment was the absence of Antony Flew's famous (and much anthologized) essay, "Theology and Falsification", but this is only a cavil. There is always room for one more custard pie, as Orwell wrote. Oh, and it would be nice if this book were printed instead of photocopied.

Introduction to Islam (4th Edition) Review

Introduction to Islam (4th Edition)
Average Reviews:

Let's say you know nothing about Islam. But you want to learn everything about it that can be learned in one book, and in a readable format. Pick up Denny. He covers the full gamut of psychology, religion, history, sociology, and much more, in a way the layman can easily understand. There are times when he seems to accept a little too much the Muslim version of history without investigating it further, but in general he seems to respect Islamic beliefs and still maintain a historical critical perspective. Especially helpful is the background in Mesopotamian beliefs, Judaism, and Christianity provided before hand. It frames the Islamic movement historically, and also provides an easy etic segue for the typical Western reader. And while Denny goes into great detail on orthodox and folk Islam, he is to be additionally commended for the sections on Sufism, which often get short shrift in scholarly works on Islam.
The title is apt. After reading this, one will know Islam thoroughly at the introductory level.

A tour de force. Corrigan manages to provide literary, historical, mythological themes and contexts that illuminate current practice and belief.I found the details of this book enlarged my understanding of why and how these religions have many common strains and where they depart from one another. It also explains how the traditions of each, along with the practice, ethics and politics keep each vital enough in different countries and changing times to keep them going. A very weighty and multidimensional subject written with much grace. It's not only excellent as a reference book, it also holds up as a fascinating read.

For college students that don't have much time for a lot of reading, this text offers a nice summary of the key philosophical views from the ancients to Rorty and Gilligan. It presents them in a no nonsense historical progression. Some short original paragraphs are included.

Paul and His Theology: A Brief Sketch (2nd Edition) Review

Paul and His Theology: A Brief Sketch (2nd Edition)

First off, this commentary by Fitzmyer can be hard to read. Stick with it though and it will pay off. His writing style can be dense, as it is crammed with footnotes and is rambling. Once you get used to his style, you notice how great his organization and ideas are. Fitzmyer really puts forth some great insights, and anyone who has read Paul will find themselves nodding their heads as they go through the book. I had to read this for a class on Paul, and I'm glad I did.

Introduction to Hebrew Bible: A Guided Tour of Israel's Sacred Library Review

Introduction to Hebrew Bible: A Guided Tour of Israel's Sacred Library

I used this book last semester when I taught Intro to Old Testament at a small liberal arts university in Ohio. Bowley is a good scholar and his literary approach in this text book is very useful. Also, I enjoyed the connections he makes between the three Abrahamic faiths (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam).
However, I was sorely disappointed with the quality of the editing. For example, there is a place where the name of God is miss spelled in Hebrew. Further, the Hebrew heading for the chapter on Deuteronomy is also misspelled. Finally there are many errors in the English text. For as expensive as this book is and considering the publisher I think that the quality of the editing should have been much much better.

The Church of Our Fathers Review

The Church of Our Fathers

If you want the overview of the history of the Christian Church by a writer of great skill and sincerity, this is the right book for you. No footnotes. Not a lot of scholarly depth. But what it does have is a lively prose style and a very good selection of events to tell the story of the Church. Christians should know at least something of the history of the Church. Bainton's book will serve as an excellent starting place.

Feuds about Families: Conservative, Centrist, Liberal, and Feminist Perspectives Review

Feuds about Families: Conservative, Centrist, Liberal, and Feminist Perspectives

The real power of this book is found in the first article written by the editor. She outlines each of the three primary perspectives on the family and politics by stating the reasons why the family is in crisis, what the consequnces of the factors on the family, and what this political perspective indicates are the public policy solutions. The book has "readings" from each point of view on issues of interest like abortion, crime, etc. The reading are very enlighting and useful. I gave it four stars because she only provides one reading for the liberal/feminist perspective. I do believe they somewhat different and should get a "reading" each. Thanks to the author for her hard work. My students in family studies love it. It is a real eye openner to the issues of politics and family.
