Practical Research: Planning and Design (9th Edition Review

Practical Research: Planning and Design (9th Edition

Research, it is safe to say, is probably not the average person's favorite course to take in school. The subject itself, for most, is bland and boring and probably not very accessible from a learning standpoint.
Enter Leedy and Omrod. "Practical Research" is just an outstanding book to learn research from or to teach a research course with. First off, the book is small and it is written in simple language with "practical" examples. This makes the subject a lot more accessible to the average reader. Second, it contains lots of helpful hints and checklists to help make the learning process easier. The companion website for this book contains practice tests that the students can use to gauge their learning (as well as e-mail results to get feedback from the instructor).
Though the book is short, it is still very thorough and to the point. There is no tradeoff in quality of information for brevity which is a great point in favor of this book. Overall, this book is a superior learning tool because it communicates the research process very clearly. A student at any level, be it, middle school, secondary school, undergraduate or graduate, can easily learn the research process from this text.
We used this as one of the texts for a graduate level research methods course I took and it was a big hit with all enrolled in the class.
Here's a quick rundown of the books topics:
1.What is Research?
2.Research Tools
3.Identifying the research problem
4.Literature Review
5.Research design planning
6.Research proposal writing
7.Qualitative research
8.Historical research
9.Descriptive research
10.Experimental and Causal-Comparative designs
11.Statistical techniques for quantitative data analysis
12.Writing and publishing the research report
Overall, "Practical Research" is a great learning solution whether you are independently trying to learn research methods or if you are an instructor looking for a great textbook for your class.
Highly Recommended

For a wide variety of graduate or undergraduate research courses.
Written in uncommonly engaging and elegant prose, this text is a "do-it-yourself, understand-it-yourself" manual designed to help research students in any discipline understand the fundamental structure of quality research and the methodical process that leads to genuinely significant results. It guides the reader, step-by-step, from the selection of a problem, through the process of conducting authentic research, to the preparation of a completed report, with practical suggestions based on a solid theoretical framework and sound pedagogy.
Suited for the core text in any introductory research course or even for self-instruction, this text will show students two things: 1) that quality research demands planning and design; and, 2) how their own research projects can be executed effectively and professionally.

It is a good book with clear illustration of the statistics. It begin with simple statistics and then move on to more difficult analysis. Before I get this book, whenever I pick up a book about statistics, I feel fate. Then I close it immediately after reading 1 to 2 pages, and never pick it up again. However, for this particular book, I've read more than half (about 300 pages)and still want to finish it. After you've read one page, you are eager to read another and another. So, I highly recommend this book to undergradaute and postgraduate students.

Exploring Research (7th Edition) Review

Exploring Research (7th Edition)

Having previously purchased a required research textbook that was written in a truly "mind-numbing" fashion, I went online to find a supplemental text. I was looking for something to help me develop some background knowledge in order to better understand my assigned readings. I consider myself very lucky for having found "Exploring Research". The writing style is very straightforward. I was easily able to read the textbook within a few days, and this made understanding the assigned readings in my course textbook much easier to do.
Easy to understand charts are used to illustrate points and organize the information. Practical resources are given to assist in developing a Literature Review. Rather than simply telling the reader to read a research study "critically", the author provides a list of specific questions an introductory student can ask themselves for each section of a report being read. As a supplemental text for the beginning student, this book is a wonderful resource for making sense of the basic research concepts.
Chapters include:
The Role and Importance of Research
The Research Process: Coming to Terms
Selecting a Problem and Reviewing the Research
Sampling and Generalizability
Measurement, Reliability, and Validity
Methods of Measuring Behavior
Data Collection and Descriptive Statistics
Introducing Inferential Statistics
Nonexperimental Research: Descriptive and Correlational Methods
Nonexperimental Research: Qualitative Methods
Pre- and True Experimental Research Methods
Quasi-Experimental Research: A Close Cousin to Experimental
Research
Writing a Research Proposal
Writing a Research Manuscript
