Psychology of Investing (4th Edition) (The Prentice Hall Series in Finance) Review

Psychology of Investing (4th Edition) (The Prentice Hall Series in Finance)

Most of the typical psychology of trading books just regurgitate the same 'ol same 'ol. This one hits all the bases with examples to back them up - and no fluff. I really appreciated how everything was condensed and to the point without having to read a lengthy discourse on each topic. That made it easy to digest the material and left me with a lot to think about. This was the best book I've read in it's class. Well worth reading.

The Inefficient Stock Market Review

The Inefficient Stock Market

Most investors would benefit from reading this book. It is a good overview of what is known about market inefficiencies and how they can be exploited.
For those who find it too down-market, he also has a weighty tome called "Modern Investment Theory" which is more thorough and more academic in tone. As an example, it describes how to combine Markowicz's techniques with factor models to exploit the inefficiencies more effectively than the approach suggested in 'What works on Wall St' etc.

Sparked with wit and humor, this clever and insightful book provides clear evidence that the stock market is inefficient. In the author's view, models based on rational economic behavior cannot explain important aspects of market behavior. The book tackles important issues in today's financial market in a highly conversational and entertaining manner that will appeal to most readers. Chapter topics include: estimating expected return with the theories of modern finance, estimating portfolio risk and expected return with ad hoc factor models, payoffs to the five families, predicting future stock returns with the expected-return factor model, super stocks and stupid stocks, the international results, the topography of the stock market, the positive payoffs to cheapness and profitability, the negative payoff to risk, and the forces behind the technical payoffs to price-history. For anyone who wants to learn more about today's financial markets.

Think Twice Sociology Looks at Current Social Issues (2nd Edition) Review

Think Twice Sociology Looks at Current Social Issues (2nd Edition)

This is a great sociological book. It looks at current issues in a sociological perspective. I found it to be informative and enjoyable as sociology student. However this book would be great for the general public. I have only read some of the articles but I found it to be very balanced by providing the pros and cons of every argument. The only reason I don't give this book five stars is because I haven't read all the articles yet. A sure buy.

This volume lets readers realize for themselves that a "sociological imagination" can help them understand the burning questions of today's society, and that this kind of thinking is within their grasp. It illustrates how understanding society means engaging with its issues. The book consists of a series of debates in which multiple sides of today's hottest topics are examined: Is the environment improving? Is religion dead? Do poor people create their own poverty? Should marijuana be legalized? Is ethnic nationalism destructive? Revealing how much sociology has to contribute to our understanding of these topics, it encourages readers to Think Twice...then think again. The essays and debates presented here examine the issues surrounding the individual and society, social differences, social institutions and social change. For anyone interested in a balanced view of many of the most crucial issues and dilemmas in our society and our earth.
