What's awesome about this workbook? The problems. The combination of problems. The way you have several skills on one worksheet - ends up saving paper and shows development of concepts. Some skills have very interesting types of problems that aren't in the Algebra textbook my school provides. This textbook remains my absolute favorite Algebra 1 resource. I'm not quite as fond of its Algebra 2 counterpart, but I use that workbook too. In my opinion, the only difficulty with this workbook is that it doesn't have an answer key. Of course anyone worth their Algebra salt can easily work the problems out, sometimes it's helpful when time is short to have a key handy. I thought the answers might be in the TE, but I don't see them in mine. Hmm.

Business Statistics by Example (5th Edition) Part A and Part B Review

Business Statistics by Example (5th Edition) Part A and Part B
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've used this textbook in the Athabasca University MBA program. The "Quantitative Analysis" course is an introductory course in statistics, with a focus on business applications. This text is perfect, as the examples used are directly relevant to businesspeople. There are also many questions and exercises, with the answers provided in the back of the book for all the odd-numbered questions. This allows students to practice and check their answers, while still allowing the professor to assign even-numbered questions as practice work to be checked by her later. The text starts with basic statistics, moves into probability, and continues all the way into multiple regression and non-parametric statistics. Real data sets are used liberally, and there are tutorials for SAS, SPSS, Minitab and ASP. Each section clearly defines critical terms offset from the body of the text, and the over 1000 exercises use data from real-world examples. Each chapter has exercises divided into "Learning the Mechanics" (straightforward applications of new concepts) and "Applying the Concepts" (applications of concepts to the solution of real-world problems). If you're a business student having difficulty with statistics, I'd recommend this book as an excellent primary or companion text.

Laser Engineering Review

Laser Engineering
Average Reviews:

Kuhn's book is undeniably for engineers seeking a quick entree to the field of laser design. As such, it does a fine job. Information is put forth in a very straightforward style and step-by-step procedures are presented. The information is given at an advanced undergraduate level and is quite accessible. Additional information which an engineer might find useful, such as the history and patent numbers of laser innovations, is included. Also included are chapters on all-important support technology. Students seeking a thorough foundation in theory will be disappointed by the lack of fully-developed derivations, but this lack is consistent with the author's goals. This book would be well complemented by the classic work by Koechner.

Presents fundamental principles of lasers immediately relevant to lasers in practice. Balancing theory with engineering examples from well-established laser companies, the book provides an important and practical design resource. Using actual laser systems from major companies as examples, the book provides an opportunity to apply skills. The book also introduces non-linear optics and covers important support technologies. It also incorporates material on basic laser safety and summarizes basic optics commonly used in laser engineering. A valuable reference book for practicing electrical engineers working with lasers.

This book will teach you when to use a comma; semicolon; colon; capitalization; etc. This book helps with troublsome words like "legislator" or "legislature"; it helps with one word/two words; when to use a comma instead of a period after the answer "yes" or "no"; etc. This is an all around great book for anyone who uses punctuation or grammar in their everday life.

Classroom Instruction that Works: Research-Based Strategies for Increasing Student Achievement Review

Classroom Instruction that Works: Research-Based Strategies for Increasing Student Achievement
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'll keep this short and sweet, and not summarize the contents of the book. Such can be found in other reviews, as well as the editorial synopsis. Instead, let me just suggest that "Classroom Instruction that Works??? is a long overdue work that can be used in a three-fold manner.
First, it should be required reading for every new teacher. It clearly details for them what is effective in the classroom, regardless of grade level. There is little philosophy here. This is ???meat and potatoes??? practicality.
Secondly, the research in this book should become an integral part of every teacher-evaluation process. It provides a model paradigm of excellence in teaching above and beyond the subjectivity extant in most evaluations today.
Finally, this book should be a personal read of every experienced teacher. I cannot express my feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment when I realized--I already do many of these things! While I know I can improve in many areas because of reading this work, much of my teaching was validated by sound research, and that felt good!
It is my hope that this material will be presented at many of the national education conferences I attend each year--in fact, I plan on using much of this in my own presentations.
The book is nicely organized, backed by solid research, and utilizes illustrative scenarios which make complex methodology very understandable. And isn't this the goal of every classroom teacher?
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Biological Anthropology: The Natural History of Humankind Review

Biological Anthropology: The Natural History of Humankind
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Although published as a textbook for university students, this volume is an excellent read for anybody wishing to understand the course of evolution. The authors have assembled a wealth of material, organised it in an effective manner and presented it with outstanding prose skill. Lead author Craig Stanford, whose books on primate behaviour are well-known, is joined by neurologist and geneticist John Allen and anthropologist Susan Anton. The trio brings many years of experience to the task of explaining human origins. After a brief introduction explaining what is meant by "Biological Anthropology", the authors provide a fine survey of the basic mechanisms of natural selection - DNA and genetics. Their depiction of how the genome is formed and how that structure builds the elements needed for natural selection to operate is an outstanding brief summary. Using available chemicals, DNA's mechanisms to build cells are explained, supplemented by vivid graphic images. From the process of cell building, the authors move on to show how the completed organism must deal with its environment, which includes other creatures, plant life and climate conditions through adaptation down succeeding generations. The authors describe the various factors leading to producing new species, isolation, elapsed time and new conditions. They also address the issue of how fossils and conditions are recorded in time and how researchers use a variety of techniques to determine age and place. The species of concern, of course, are the primates. The sudden demise of the great reptiles that had ruled the Earth for over 150 million years opened new vistas for the life that survived the catastrophe. Little, fur-bearing creatures moved into niches that allowed rapid change. Many varieties emerged, but noteworthy among them were shrew-sized omnivores. Spreading over the land and forests, some of them developed new traits that would ultimately lead to us. The origin of the primates is lost in the mists of time, compounded by the paucity of fossils and lack of agreement on what typifies a "primate". The earliest proposed species bears the ungainly name of "Plesiadapiforms". The authors describe the traits suggesting these were our earliest ancestors, while explaining what is lacking to establish a firm identity. Each of the points they introduce is enhanced by the contending researchers' arguments over lineage.Once past the vague beginnings, the team offers insights into how ape transformed into human. The physiological trends, such as jaw structure and teeth are outlined. Each of the fossil examples of pre-human hominids is examined critically with the important elements indicating its lineage in the human story assessed. From a lonely skull in a desert to remote caves, creatures that one day would lead to you and me are revealed. At some point, one or more of the ape-like animals stood upright. Demonstrating what a major step this was, with changes in spinal column, head position and posture, the new form proved to be even more adaptable than its predecessors. Not the least of the advantages gained, they note, is the ability to travel long distances with minimal energy expenditure. As much as we've learned, the authors remind us of the many questions remaining. The actual number of species, where and how they lived, and how many lineages did the ape ancestor lead to over the millennia?Emerging "modern" forms bring new challenges in understanding. Although early apes sent offshoots out of Africa, it was the hominids that proved to be the most ambitious travellers. Homo erectus spent over a million years traversing Asia, leaving fossils in far-flung sites across the continent and in the islands southeast of the mainland. Their remains have been dated to as recently as 25 to 50 thousand years old. The recent find on the island of Flores suggest an even more recent descendant. A new species, Homo sapiens, and its own diaspora out of Africa follows. Its most significant aspect, the development of intelligence and language is thoroughly examined. A major change took place leading to the one species with the highest proportion of brain size to body weight. Coupled with changes in physiology, our species created a new form of intricate communication abilities. The brain also went through changes in organisation. Which factor made the greatest contribution to human behaviour patterns is the concluding segment of the book. It is that aspect of our history that remains most contentious and the authors examine the various views surrounding that issue. It's a fitting conclusion to this in-depth and comprehensive study. [stephen a. haines - Ottawa, Canada]

Vistas y voces latinas (3rd Edition)

Using this book as a Junior in High school, I can say that this book can be helpful, but in the end it will depend on how your teacher ultimately ends up using it. For example, the stories covered in this book are typically read at the college level, and followed by exercises spanning multiple pages. This is both beneficial and constricting at the same time. While completing these exercises (Such as filling in the blank, writing your own opinion of the story, etc.) will definitely help you to understand and reflect more deeply on the story presented, they can be easily overwhelming if your grasp of Spanish is not advanced enough. If this book is required reading for your class, ask your teacher how she plans on using it. Otherwise, you will be surprised how challenging it might be.
Bottom line: I would recommend this to more advanced or serious Spanish students.

Offers new selections by well-known contemporary authors such as Sandra Cisneros, Gustavo Pérez Firmat, Angeles Mastretta, and more. Opens each chapter with a poem. Offers interviews or autobiographical essays with each author. Provides a new vocabulary section that contains useful Spanish expressions and terms. Study Skills: Do I Really Need This Stuff? (2nd Edition) Review

Study Skills: Do I Really Need This Stuff (2nd Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off, I'd like to point out that I give this book four stars out of five because the 2nd Edition of the book is much different and vastly improved over this version -- the main differences being that the 2nd Edition has "Chapters" in a different order from the first edition's "Modules," and the 2nd Edition merges a few chapters while adding a few new ones. If you are buying this book for a class or college course, MAKE SURE whether your instructor wants you to get this version, or the updated 2nd Edition version. If you're looking for the 2nd Edition, it's got a redesigned cover with a blue design around the edges.
Aside from that, this book contains so much useful information that, like many other people have said after reading through it or taking a class based on it, I think it should be required reading for all college freshman, or even high school seniors! Most of the information in this book is simple and common sense, but that doesn't mean it's boring or obvious stuff. For example, strategies for more "active" reading include the SQ4R method of pre-reading, which is used to approach your reading material with a solid overview of what to expect; this, in turn, allows you to respond more appropriately to new material and absorb more of the useful parts. Don't think this book is only about reading or studying, though. There are entire chapters dedicated to "learning styles," goal setting, memory, getting along with others in group activities, time management, note taking, test taking, and much more!
This is an excellent book, which I would recommend to ANYONE, even if they are not students. You can apply the skills, methods and ideas in this book to any part of your life, including work and play. If it involves learning, I'm sure you'll find something in this book that will help you.
One quick note, most of the "activities" in the book are simply introspective surveys meant to give you a better idea of how YOU work and learn, but they take up a considerable amount of space and are not all that helpful if you already have a clear view of how you do things. It still isn't a bad idea to at least skim through the Activities and do them in your head, for the sake of being thorough. There are very few, if any, actual "practice" activities, since most of the skills and techniques taught can be tried out with virtually ANY book, lecture, video, note taking, or test format, and the results will be self-evident. This is NOT a workbook, even though it is printed in paperback workbook format with perforated pages.

The added value is in Section 2, where the student is presented with a practice page per lesson and a guided problem solving strategy (understand, plan and carry on, check, reading comprehension, graphic organizer, among other things).

It offers an analysis and critique of the music itself as well as how it is produced and marketed, including such recent phenomena as the rise of television idols, the introduction of reggaeton, and the return of protest music.Accessibly written, this text is organized chronologically and thematically around particular genres/styles of music and addresses such dimensions as race, class, gender, ethnicity, technology, copyright and the structure of the music industry as they affect the development of the music.
