(More customer reviews)"Drawing to See" is an excellent book for someone interested in a somewhat basic explanation of the aspects of drawing responsively. It is a contracted presentation of the concepts presented in two other books by Goldstein, "The Art of Responsive Drawing" and "Design and Composition". I feel that "Drawing to See" would be an excellent text for Drawing I and II classes at the community college level.

Progressing logically from the most encompassing fundamentals to more specific drawing considerations, this book addresses the options, challenges, and methodologies of drawings made in the presence of subjects such as still life, figure, and landscape. It revolves around the premise that beginners' main interests center on developing the ability to draw what they see or envision in a more or less objective manner. The book approaches the teaching of drawing in the same way artists approach the creating of drawings: by proceeding from the general to the specific, acknowledging the given conditions of visual expression, being consistent and clear, and presenting a work in an organized and economical manner. Photography (10th Edition) Review

(More customer reviews)For those impatient enough: if you are to buy one book that would teach you photography - this should be the one. This book has survived seven editions and it has enough information to make your head hurt. Needless to say, this book does not offer a silver bullet that would make you Ansel Adams, but it has enough information to build a solid technical foundation upon which you could leverage your creativity.
Make no mistake: this book is first and foremost about film photography. While there is a somewhat obligatory chapter on digital photography, it is hardly more than a very brief introduction. The rest of the book implies film photography (needless to say, that information on exposure and lens is generally applicable to both film and digital photography techniques).
Furthermore, the book is seriously geared toward black and white photography. There is plenty of information about the color process but it feels complementary to the narration.
On the negative side, there are only a couple things to note:
- Having so many precise instructions, this book ought to have an appendix containing all data in one place (from reciprocity failure correction numbers, to N+2 development time increase, to film processing checklists). It is a shame, the book doesn't have such a reference chapter.
- The price of the latest edition is way too steep. While I am far from suggesting sacrificing quality for lower price (as unfortunately so many other books do), I still think that the price has risen way too high compared to older editions.
All in all, it is an excellent basic reference. It is unlikely to be the only book on your shelf, but it will definitely be an extremely useful one while you are mastering advanced photography. Bottom line: buy this book now.

The Critique Handbook: The Art Student's Sourcebook and Survival Guide (2nd Edition) Review

This book was used as a text for a joint workshop on The Critique for the art department of our school and another local college. Given the complexity of the subject matter, this book does a good job of covering the basics of an art school critique. I particularly appreciated the discussion regarding the role of faculty and the personal baggage we sometimes forget we can bring to the party. It's impossible to cover all the possible permutations of The Critique, but this book does a fine job of highlighting the peculiarities of several art disciplines and the details that should be addressed. It gives you a springboard to make the conversion even if your discipline isn't specifically covered.
If you teach art or hold critiques in your class, I believe you will find this book very helpful.
My only quibble is the type size for my aging eyes. Don't be fooled by the physical size of this book. It may be compact but it makes up for it with density.

If you are a beginner or an artist of years, there is very much to learn from this book. The text does offer some excercises, but it's greater strength is from the explanation of processes. The book doesn't play out as an analysis of art pieces, but describes the process of creating an expressive and cohesive work in pretty much any style of drawing. It tells you how to practice and what to look for in a subject and in your drawing. This was the textbook we used in my drawing classes and it has been an invaluable resource since then.
This book will help you find ideas and transfer them into your unique art.
