(More customer reviews)This is a book targeted for those who are interested in agents, what they can do, what institutions are working on them, and descriptions of many application areas with some discussion of existing programs. The authors are to be congratulated on the scope of their research and reporting. In my view the book discusses much more of the "what" agents can do rather than the "how" and dwells on the market potential of agents. While such a review is of interest to many readers, it left me unimpressed. Any reader who is interested in an overview of the potential applications of agents and agent technology without having to dwell much on the detailed workings of the technology or what the current research issues are, this is the perfect book. For those who have some familiarity with the topic of agents, and desire more specific information about how to develop them, this book is a poor choice. Books I prefer to this one include Agent Technology, Jennings and Wooldridge (editors) , The Design of Intelligent Agents by J. Mueller, and Artificial Intelligence: a Modern Approach by Russell and Norvig.

(More customer reviews)Great book, I've read it cover to cover. But why buy it when the author has newer versions out? Because (1) it is more concise and (2) it has info not in the other editions. I recommend you read this one cover-to-cover and buy the others as more detailed reference. His 3 other books (Advanced Programming in the Unix Environment, Unix Net. Prog.,2nd Ed., Vol.1; Unix Net. Programming, 2nd Ed., Vol.2) are far more detailed and worth having, but each is very thick. AND, the author died without finishing Unix Network Programming, 2nd Ed., Vol.3 (Applications). You have to buy this older edition to get the applications. It's easier to read 1 book 700 pp. long than to read 3 books, each 700 pp. long. Time is money.

(More customer reviews)This is an absolutely amazing book. You can read it if you know absolutely nothing about UNIX and learn how to use it. Else you can read it if you are an experienced user and find the reference information you need in a much simpler language than UNIX man pages or 1000-page manuals. The vast amount of information, no redundancy and clear explanations make this book worth every penny spent.
Contents of the book were put together were thoughtfully. It contains very comprehensive coverage of features and utilities of UNIX, including very detailed coverage of Bourne, Korn and C shells. Additionally it has very nice introductory chapters on Networking, Internet and X-Windows, just the right amount of information to give a reader solid understanding of the foundations of the topic. Programmers will surely appreciate chapters on UNIX development facilities and systems programming, which contain just the right amount of information to get you to accomplish your tasks without flooding you with unnecessary details. Also, author includes examples for every feature, short enough to effectively illustrate how to use them, which I found very helpful.
I personally used this book to teach myself UNIX (I was previously an NT person and didn't know anything about UNIX) and I am now doing hardcore development on Solaris with this book constantly on my desk.

(More customer reviews)Like Larson's book, "Problem Solving Through Problems", this is a textbook aimed at preparing students for mathematics contests such as the annual Putnam Competition. It will probably also be of interest to high school students preparing for some of the higher level contests such as the AIME, USAMO, and the international olympiad. The text consists of a large collection of problems, along with many solutions. There's little here on heuristics for problem solving. Instead, the book focuses on bits of mathematical theory that often come up in solving such problems but may not often come up in the undergraduate curriculum ( things like Jensen's inequality, the pigeonhole principle, etc.) Larson's "Problem Solving Through Problems" is similar in style and content. For more on problem solving heuristics, see Polya's "Mathematical Discovery" or "Thinking Mathematically" by Mason, Burton, and Stacey.

This book will teach you when to use a comma; semicolon; colon; capitalization; etc. This book helps with troublsome words like "legislator" or "legislature"; it helps with one word/two words; when to use a comma instead of a period after the answer "yes" or "no"; etc. This is an all around great book for anyone who uses punctuation or grammar in their everday life.
This is one of the best books I have read on this subject and I highly recommend it.
