"Issues" is a must read for any intro. to political science class, and a good read for those wanting to know what the issues in today's political rhetoric are all about. The authors offer a balanced perspective, and leave the reader anxious to find out more. Academic in nature, but universal in scope.

A substantive alternative to typical "issues" texts—which cover too many issues, too superficially—this intriguing and comprehensive text offers a more in-depth and coherent approach to contemporary policy problems and solutions. It provides a conceptual framework in which students can become comfortable actually doing policy analysis, and in learning skills beyond reading about certain political issues. Thematically organized, it looks at nine specific issues grouped into three broad categories that hold an enduring importance in American political life—money and politics, violence and politics, and biology and politics. All nine chapters and their respective topics (campaigns, corruption, welfare, crime, terrorism, arms control, the environment, biomedical issues, and biotechnology) have a strong conceptual base with current political dimensions and policy concerns woven throughout. Students not only learn the context, status, and prospects of issues confronting the U.S. government, but also see how these issues now cross our domestic borders into a global realm.

...I can't think of a textbook/anthology that has excited me more. This is the rare book that I can't wait to use in the classroom, but also can't wait to simply read for my own pleasure and inspiration.
I love the way it approaches creative writing from a variety of angles, taking in all forms of the subject. Importantly, the actual readings take on this same "wide canvas" approach. It's too bad the entire Table of Contents isn't on this page, because it's wonderful. I've got the book in front of me right now, and skimming through the contents again, I can see the quality and scope of the readings...an exciting mix of the well-known and lesser-but-should-be-better-known. (I started to list some of the pieces that jumped out at me, but the list went on too long.)
The editors have a firm grasp on what inspires writers, and present a perfect anthology here.

For courses in creative writing. A Garden of Forking Paths is an anthology of contemporary literature that covers the full spectrum of genre possibilities while exploring diverse styles, themes, experiences, and forms. The readings in this text inspire the emergence of innovative creative writing. In a multi-genre creative writing course, an instructor faces the dilemma of assigning several texts in order to offer good examples of writing in each genre. This text solves this problem by presenting large samplings of creative non-fiction, short fiction, poetry, alternative forms, and essays concerning craft. Story:Beth Anstandig and Eric Killough, guided by fiction writer, essayist, and poet Robert Creeley's belief that all writing is essentially the act of articulation and that "form is content, content form," brought together as many successful examples of creative ideas and writing styles as possible in a single volume. They grouped these writings by genre for ease of use so that you can choose how you want to spend your reading time. From science fiction writer Philip K.Dick to naturalist Charles Bowden, you will find in the garden that each author has labored to articulate at least one of the seemingly infinite possibilities that the creative spirit can bring into being. Many of the authors in the text have successfully created works of written art using more than one genre.Beth Anstandig and Eric Killough created this text in hope that these examples will inspire your students to experiment in multiple genres as well.
