I found the guide to be a decent supplement to the book, which I enjoyed. However I will admit it's possible the reason I liked it as much as I did was my professor did an amazing job of instructing, thus making the book very easy to understand.

Investments (6th Edition) Review

Investments (6th Edition)

I've read a lot of popular books about investing. Some of them were helpful in introducing me to investing in general. I decided, however, that I wanted a more thorough knowledge of the subject. I bought "The Portable MBA in Investment" by Peter Bernstein and found it utterly incomprehensible. If I wanted to be well-grounded in investing, this was unacceptable.
I borrowed Sharpe's text from the library and have been blasting through it for the past few days. It isn't an easy text; anyone who wants to tackle the subject should have some background in math and statistics. And I would suggest that people be at least somewhat familiar with investing. Otherwise, they may be turned off completely by the stuff. Once you're ready to go, though, make sure you read Sharpe's book first.
I've sampled other texts, and Sharpe's is the clearest and most relevant. Nothing is omitted. Everything from factor models to reading stock tables is included. The book is extremely well-written. Most of the material is presented simply. For example, the formulas are illustrated with examples that make understanding infinitely easier. And each chapter has a sidebar called "Institutional Issues" which puts a real-world spin on the chapter's subject matter. An invaluable book for the serious investor.

The author has good communication skills as well as lots of experience in agriculture-- a somewhat rare combination. The book deals with an extremely important topic: the impact of agriculture on planet Earth. (Let's face it. You just can't feed 6 billion people without having a big impact). Besides being important, the book is also well organized, well illustrated and interesting to read.

Most of the typical psychology of trading books just regurgitate the same 'ol same 'ol. This one hits all the bases with examples to back them up - and no fluff. I really appreciated how everything was condensed and to the point without having to read a lengthy discourse on each topic. That made it easy to digest the material and left me with a lot to think about. This was the best book I've read in it's class. Well worth reading.

The Secrets of Economic Indicators: Hidden Clues to Future Economic Trends and Investment Opportunities, 2nd Edition

On any given weekday, stocks and bonds gyrate in response to some economic announcement.
Bernard Baumohl, a Time magazine economics writer with more than 20 years of experience, has written a guide to these indicators and their importance to the financial markets.
The book promises to become dog-eared quickly. In concise language it explains what Baumohl indicates are the most influential U. S. and International Economic Indicators. Beginning in Chapter 2, the author defines the phrases and concepts essential to an understanding of the indicators.
In Chapter 3 he jumps into the heart of the matter: U. S. economic indicators. Each indicator is evaluated using the following criteria:
*Why is it important?
*How is it computed?
*What does it day about the future?
*How might stocks, bonds and/or currencies react to its announcement?
In Chapter 4, he examines the 10 most influential foreign indicators using the same criteria.
In the final two chapters, Baumohl provides a list of web sites that compile economic data. What in the past costs thousands of dollars is available on the web at no cost.
If any facet of your life is effected by these indicators, you owe it to yourself to keep a copy of this book nearby.

"This is the real deal. Baumohl miraculously breathes life into economic indicators and statistics."–The Wall Street Journal"This is the most up-to-date guide to economic indicators and their importance to financial markets in print. The coverage of less-reported indicators, especially those from nongovernment sources, is hard to find elsewhere. The inclusion of the actual published tables helps the newer student of the markets find the data in the public release. For anyone trying to follow the economic data, this should be next to your computer so that you can understand and find the data on the Internet."–David Wyss, Chief Economist, Standard and Poor's"I find Baumohl's writing fascinating. In addition to the famous indicators, he includes many that I hadn't heard of. I really appreciate that he tells you exactly where to find each indicator on the Web. Just about anyone who's serious about understanding which way the economy is headed will want to read this book. It could be a classic."–Harry Domash, Columnist for MSN Money and Publisher, Winning Investing Newsletter"Bernie Baumohl has accomplished something of real value in The Secrets of Economic Indicators. He has successfully demystified the world of financial and economic news that bombards us in our daily lives. Both professional investors and casual observers of the world of finance and economics will be grateful for what he has done. The constant stream of heretofore bewildering news from the world of business and finance can now be easily understood. Every businessperson or investor should keep a copy of Baumohl's book close at hand as he or she catches up on the business, stock market, and economic events of the day. It is great, at long last, to have someone who has eliminated what may have been so perplexing to so many and to have done so with such remarkable clarity."–Hugh Johnson, Chairman and Chief Investment Officer of Johnson Illington Advisors"Bernie Baumohl has written a must-read educational and reference book that every individual investor will find indispensable for watching, monitoring, and interpreting the markets. The daily flow of high frequency economic indicators is the stuff that makes financial markets move and that can signal the big trends that make or break investor portfolios. Most important, Bernie's long experience in reporting economics for Time Magazine helps make the 'dismal science' lively and interesting."–Allen Sinai, President and Chief Global Economist, Decision Economics, Inc."Baumohl has a gift for taking a complicated subject and allowing it to read like a fast-moving novel. My confidence in reading and understanding economic indicators as portrayed in this book made me realize the possibilities this information holds for improving my personal net worth as well as navigating my business toward higher profits. I recommend this book if you care about your future finances."–Morris E. Lasky, CEO, Lodging Unlimited, Inc.; Manager and consultant for $6 billion in hotel assets; Chairman, Lodging Conference; Chairman, International Hotel Conference"I think this is an excellent book. It's well written, accessible to a variety of readers, deals with an interesting and important subject, and covers the topic well. It deserves to get a lot of notice and use."–D. Quinn Mills, Alfred J. Weatherhead, Jr., Professor of Business Administration, Harvard Business School"Economic statistics, employment data, Federal Reserve surveys. Think they are boring? Think again! They can drive markets into a frenzy, causing billions of dollars to be made or lost in an instant. Bernie Baumohl brilliantly, clearly, and, yes, entertainingly describes what every investor and business manager should know about economic indicators: which ones move markets, how to interpret them, and how to use them to spot and capitalize on future economic trends. The Secrets of Economic Indicators is an extraordinary and insightful work–an enormously important contribution to the body of financial literature. Read it and then keep it on your desk. Consult it the next time you are deluged with a flurry of economic statistics. Your understanding certainly will be enhanced, and your portfolio will likely be as well."–Robert Hormats, Vice Chairman, Goldman Sachs (International)"If you want to make money investing, this is an essential trend-tracking tool that will help get you to the bank. This book is the real deal. Bernard Baumohl miraculously breathes life into deadly economic indicators and boring statistics . . . he knows what he's talking about, and his expertise proves it."–Gerald Celente, Director, The Trends Research InstituteCOMPLETELY UPDATED! Ethical Theory and Business (8th Edition) Review

Ethical Theory and Business (8th Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I teach business ethics at the college level, and have found Ethical Theory and Business to be very helpful. Basically, B and B attempt to do three things, or so it seems to me. First, they offer an introductory essay, covering some of the main distinctions in both meta-ethics (e. g. whether morality is objective or subjective) and normative ethics. This essay is the weakest part of the book, I think, because they seem to offer caracatures of most relativist leaning views (e. g. egoism), and do not adequately criticize Kantian moral philosophy. But even so, the essay does explain many useful distinctions in philosophical ethical thought. Second, B and B offer both classic readings in Business Ethics (e. g. Milton Friedman), as well as really up to date readings, by many of the leaders in the field (e. g. R. Edward Freeman). This is quite a good selection of readings, although they have omitted a few classic essays (like Galbraith's 'The Dependence Effect'), and a few subjects which might have been useful, such as the question of whether one can attribute moral agency to corporations at all. Even so, B and B include more than any course in Business Ethics could cover. Third, B and B provide a Web site with excersizes and instructor aids. Depending on how much one uses the Web, this may be helpful too. So generally speaking, although no anthology is perfect, Beauchamp and Bowie have put together an admirable collection. There is a seventh edition coming out soon. Perhaps that one will be as good as this one.

This book gives a great overview of the study of economics. I used it for an Introduction to Global Economics class in college and found it to be easy to read and understand. The information is extremely up-to-date, and is displayed not only through text, but by charts and graphs as well. There also additional materials (practice test questions, a CD rom, and a guide to researching economics on the internet) which accompany the text which are available as well. Overall, a great book for the study of basic economics!

This is a great sociological book. It looks at current issues in a sociological perspective. I found it to be informative and enjoyable as sociology student. However this book would be great for the general public. I have only read some of the articles but I found it to be very balanced by providing the pros and cons of every argument. The only reason I don't give this book five stars is because I haven't read all the articles yet. A sure buy.

This volume lets readers realize for themselves that a "sociological imagination" can help them understand the burning questions of today's society, and that this kind of thinking is within their grasp. It illustrates how understanding society means engaging with its issues. The book consists of a series of debates in which multiple sides of today's hottest topics are examined: Is the environment improving? Is religion dead? Do poor people create their own poverty? Should marijuana be legalized? Is ethnic nationalism destructive? Revealing how much sociology has to contribute to our understanding of these topics, it encourages readers to Think Twice...then think again. The essays and debates presented here examine the issues surrounding the individual and society, social differences, social institutions and social change. For anyone interested in a balanced view of many of the most crucial issues and dilemmas in our society and our earth.

I find Robbins's OB one of the best introductionary books for OB. Though it does not contain lots of case studies, to get started with concepts, the easy to read layout and the interesting activities that he presents makes it a very good book to get started. I personally started my OB with a much more detailed book, but after I found this one, I used this as the starting point, to get the ideas, and then used more high level books to explore further.
Why not 5 stars, well, coz as I said, I did need to look at other books to explore in detail!

Fuzzy Set Theory: Foundations and Applications Review

Fuzzy Set Theory: Foundations and Applications
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm quite impressed with the clarity and style of Klir's introduction to fuzzy set theory. The book starts with the absolute basics of classical logic and then builds to classical set theory. This half of the book is actually far superior to any of my other logic books since it puts all the truely relevant material together in a very cogent manner.
The second half of the book goes into the details of fuzzy logic and set theory while maintaining the easy style and excellent examples of the previous sections. This book, while intended as a textbook, is quite readable for those who just wish to have better knowledge of fuzzy logic. I suspect that many of the Aristotelian-based classical logicians will be hard-pressed to surpass Klir's clear explanations for their home turf.
Klir delves into the philosophical basis for the existence of fuzzy logic and I feel he does an excellent job. Haack should really read this again and then reconsider her grand statement that "I believe truth does not come in degrees" with some of the open-mindedness evidenced by Klir.
Highly recommended.

The distinctions between classical and fuzzy relations are introduced, as are representations of fuzzy relations; fuzzy equivalence relations; fuzzy partial orderings, and related topics. The book introduces fuzzy arithmetic and fuzzy numbers. It also presents a detailed introduction to fuzzy logic, multivalued logics, fuzzy propositions, quantifiers, linguistic hedges and approximate reasoning. Several basic and advanced applications for fuzzy set theory are presented as well.Any non-technical reader interested in fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic. Making of Economic Society, The (12th Edition) Review

Making of Economic Society, The (12th Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book examines the transformation of traditional society into market society: the necessary pre-conditions and steps. The author reminds us that, despite the material advances of modern society, some key economic ideas still apply. All societies must be organized for the material survival of its members. The inter-dependencies among societal members in simpler societies have not been eliminated in market societies, despite the hyping of the independent, self-maximizer by modern theorists; in fact, the complexities of modern societies may well create more dependence, not less. And market societies do have some inherent problems.
The author points out that any society must have a coherent system for producing useful goods and services and then distributing them in a manner sufficient for society's perpetuation. Man has relied upon combinations of tradition, command, and markets to solve those production and distribution problems. Tradition uses time-honored methods of work, "allocated by heredity," which are reinforced by "law, custom, and belief." Change and competitiveness are not tolerated. Command is authoritarian control of economies and is mostly associated with economies operating in rapid catch-up mode, such as the Soviet Union. However, even democracies use elements of command during periods of crisis. In market societies, the aggregation of supply and demand guide economic functioning with no distinct center of control or allegiance to past practices.
Manorial estates and the guilds dominated life in the Middle Ages along with the Church, but the author points to small beginnings of a more commercial world. Itinerant merchants established a small niche for commercial activity in some urban areas. The more successful of them came to be key financiers of monarchs keen on expanding their authority. The gold and silver realized from 16th century New World expeditions stimulated commercial activity. Calvinism, in contrast to the Catholic Church, sanctified hard work and the accumulation of wealth as an indicator of spiritual worthiness. Gradually, feudal society became more reliant upon money as a basis of social exchange. No longer were manorial lords obligated for the overall well being of serfs. The displacement of peasants by the enclosure movements was justified by the opportunities for the landed aristocracy to use their estates as sources of cash revenue.
The author identifies several changes that are necessary for a market economy to emerge. Virtually every task, good, or service has a monetary reward. The anticipation of financial reward guides such decisions as where to labor or what to produce. A society of contracts supercedes a society of status and traditional social bonds. With those changes, a certain amount of social uncertainty is introduced. Yet a market society is not without its own forms of control. The competitions of seller versus seller and buyer versus seller are constraining forces on economic behavior.
Generally it takes a market economy to substantially change the material well being of an entire society. In the first place, traditional societies are not unhappy with the status quo. What is needed are investments in capital goods, or "tools, equipment, machines, and buildings," to increase human productivity leading to higher living standards. And it is the hope for profits or higher wages that spurs investment of money and labor in those goods. But investment implies savings, which, in turn, generally requires a sacrifice in consumption and lower wages. The author suggests that the growing pains of industrialization, mostly on the backs of the working class with the "forced emigration of the peasantry by enclosure and heavy-handed exploitation," could not have been avoided. He undercuts that argument slightly by acknowledging that the forces of democracy in the 19th century ameliorated conditions for the working class.
Scientific and technological advances are often large factors in the development of capital goods and increased productivity. English industrial production literally exploded based on the inventions of such men as Wilkinson, Watt, and Arkwright. The factory system came to dominate English life. New technologies have often literally transformed market societies. The automobile, for example, drastically changed residential patterns, facilitated social independence, and was a massive generator of employment. Can anyone doubt the impacts of electricity, airplanes, television, and computers?
However, the author points out that market societies do not necessarily operate according to the basic theory. "Consumer power" is a first principle of classical economists; according to that notion, consumers force products to be sold "at the lowest price compatible with continued production." But market societies invariably tend to be dominated by a few large firms, where economic efficiencies can be attained. These large enterprises often agree among themselves to set pricing above truly competitive levels. In addition, because much of what is produced in modern economies is non essential, consistency of demand must be created through advertising. While large firms may be needed, consumer sovereignty is mostly a fiction.
Stable market economies must maintain the balances between production and purchasing and savings and investment. Workers' purchasing power must be consistent with production volumes. In addition, savings ought to be converted into investment, or capital formation. The Great Depression was brought about by workers being underpaid and capital investments not being made. The Great Depression and WWII established that government must intervene in a market economy through fiscal and monetary policies to bolster economic stability.
The author emphasizes that basic instabilities remain in market societies. In a market economy, it remains the anticipation of profit on the part of businesses and entrepreneurs that motivates most investment and growth. Technological displacement and unemployment continue to undermine purchasing power. And the author wrote in an era before the evisceration of large "countervailing" unions, the forces of globalization, and a resurgence of rightist, anti-government ideologies. Those developments could have only added to the author's concerns of instabilities.
The book is hurt by not being able to contend with the tremendous changes of the last forty years, though the cautions remain relevant today. It is, however, an excellent guide for understanding the economic and societal changes from the Middle Ages to the era of science and capitalism. Try Charles Lindblom's "The Market System."
