The Inefficient Stock Market Review

The Inefficient Stock Market
Average Reviews:

Most investors would benefit from reading this book. It is a good overview of what is known about market inefficiencies and how they can be exploited.
For those who find it too down-market, he also has a weighty tome called "Modern Investment Theory" which is more thorough and more academic in tone. As an example, it describes how to combine Markowicz's techniques with factor models to exploit the inefficiencies more effectively than the approach suggested in 'What works on Wall St' etc.

Sparked with wit and humor, this clever and insightful book provides clear evidence that the stock market is inefficient. In the author's view, models based on rational economic behavior cannot explain important aspects of market behavior. The book tackles important issues in today's financial market in a highly conversational and entertaining manner that will appeal to most readers. Chapter topics include: estimating expected return with the theories of modern finance, estimating portfolio risk and expected return with ad hoc factor models, payoffs to the five families, predicting future stock returns with the expected-return factor model, super stocks and stupid stocks, the international results, the topography of the stock market, the positive payoffs to cheapness and profitability, the negative payoff to risk, and the forces behind the technical payoffs to price-history. For anyone who wants to learn more about today's financial markets.

Smart Enough Systems: How to Deliver Competitive Advantage by Automating Hidden Decisions Review

Smart Enough Systems: How to Deliver Competitive Advantage by Automating Hidden Decisions

James Taylor knows the Enterprise Decision Making space and has a lot to teach the rest of us. The first several chapters make an excellent business case for the use of decision systems. I found myself underlining and marking content on several pages. His message, however, gets muted by his disjointed writing style, a problem compounded by a poor graphic layout. The disjointedness is mostly a distraction in the first few chapters, but becomes more critical as the content becomes deeper and more technical. (One of my current job responsibilities is leading a business rules system implementation at my company.)

"Automated decisions systems are probably already being used in your industry, and they will undoubtedly grow in importance. If your business needs to make quick, accurate decisions on an industrialized scale, you need to read this book."Thomas H. Davenport, Professor, Babson College, Author of Competing on AnalyticsThe computer-based systems most organizations rely on to support their businesses are not very smart. Many of the business decisions these companies make tend to be hidden in systems that make poor decisions, or don't make them at all. Further, most systems struggle to keep up with the pace of change. The answer is not to implement newer, "intelligent" systems. The fact is that much of today's existing technology has the potential to be "smart enough" to make a big difference to an organization's business. This book tells you how.Although the business context and underlying principles are explained in a nontechnical manner, the book also contains how-to guidance for more technical readers. The book's companion site, www.smartenoughsystems.com, has additional information and references for practitioners as well as news and updates.Additional Praise for Smart (Enough) Systems"James Taylor and Neil Raden are on to something important in this book–the tremendous value of improving the large number of routine decisions that are made in organizations every day."Dr. Hugh J. Watson, Chair of Business Administration, University of Georgia"This is a very important book. It lays out the agenda for business technology in the new century–nothing less than how to reorganize every aspect of how a company treats its customers."David Raab, President, ClientXClient"This book is an important contribution to business productivity because it covers the opportunity from both the business executive's and technologist's perspective. This should be on every operational executive's and every CIO's list of essential reading."John Parkinson, Former CTO, Capgemini, North American Region"This book shows how to use proven technology to make business processes smarter. It clearly makes the case that organizations need to optimize their operational decisions. It is a must-have reference for process professionals throughout your organization."Jim Sinur, Chief Strategy Officer, Global 360, Inc.

Think Twice Sociology Looks at Current Social Issues (2nd Edition) Review

Think Twice Sociology Looks at Current Social Issues (2nd Edition)

This is a great sociological book. It looks at current issues in a sociological perspective. I found it to be informative and enjoyable as sociology student. However this book would be great for the general public. I have only read some of the articles but I found it to be very balanced by providing the pros and cons of every argument. The only reason I don't give this book five stars is because I haven't read all the articles yet. A sure buy.

This volume lets readers realize for themselves that a "sociological imagination" can help them understand the burning questions of today's society, and that this kind of thinking is within their grasp. It illustrates how understanding society means engaging with its issues. The book consists of a series of debates in which multiple sides of today's hottest topics are examined: Is the environment improving? Is religion dead? Do poor people create their own poverty? Should marijuana be legalized? Is ethnic nationalism destructive? Revealing how much sociology has to contribute to our understanding of these topics, it encourages readers to Think Twice...then think again. The essays and debates presented here examine the issues surrounding the individual and society, social differences, social institutions and social change. For anyone interested in a balanced view of many of the most crucial issues and dilemmas in our society and our earth.

Asking the Right Questions: A Guide to Critical Thinking, 9th Edition Review

Asking the Right Questions: A Guide to Critical Thinking, 9th Edition
Average Reviews:

This book is extremely helpful at opening up ones mind to alternatives by asking questions. Not just a few questions, but question everything. Questioning leads to knowledge, and knowledge leads to wisdom.
Asking the right questions encourages a curious and open mind, analyzing issues from multiple viewpoints, thinking through questions and answers, doing needed investigation and intuitive and non-intuitive thinking. These key elements are the basis to sound critical thinking.
Asking the Right Questions has been around for many years and is still doing well. This says a lot for how many people have benefited from it. It is currently on the 8th edition. I read the 7th edition which came out in 2004. I liked the comment from the authors at the end of the preface which says they are constantly improving the book using advice and recommendations from students and others to make it better. Practicing what one preaches is an excellent sign of quality.
Since the book is constantly undergoing improvements, it is recommended to invest the extra money to buy the latest and greatest. Knowledge is tough to put a price on. The book is currently on the 8th edition.
