I found this book used and bought it from text books r us who amazon had listed selling this book. I recieved this book and it is actually in great condition as it was brand new, but I have noticed that all used books that I buy from actually are in great condition.

(More customer reviews)Let's say you know nothing about Islam. But you want to learn everything about it that can be learned in one book, and in a readable format. Pick up Denny. He covers the full gamut of psychology, religion, history, sociology, and much more, in a way the layman can easily understand. There are times when he seems to accept a little too much the Muslim version of history without investigating it further, but in general he seems to respect Islamic beliefs and still maintain a historical critical perspective. Especially helpful is the background in Mesopotamian beliefs, Judaism, and Christianity provided before hand. It frames the Islamic movement historically, and also provides an easy etic segue for the typical Western reader. And while Denny goes into great detail on orthodox and folk Islam, he is to be additionally commended for the sections on Sufism, which often get short shrift in scholarly works on Islam.
The title is apt. After reading this, one will know Islam thoroughly at the introductory level.

A very weighty and multidimensional subject written with much grace. It's not only excellent as a reference book, it also holds up as a fascinating read.

(More customer reviews)This book is quite dense. It makes for slow and contemplative reading. As a review of the anthropological literature of the Middle East, it should be a required text for any graduate or upper level undergraduate social sciences course focussing on the Middle East or Central Asia. Original source material is summarized and analyzed in comparison to other viewpoints, particularly across time. Anyone with further interest in particular areas of culture could skim the footnotes to find the complete citations for the original material. Each chapter also concludes with an annotated list of further readings, which would also be quite useful for the interested reader. My favorite sections were the second chapter, Intellectual Predecessors: East and West, and the last part of the last chapter, Writing Middle Eastern Anthropology.

(More customer reviews)Have you ever been sitting at your desk and wondered what the heck a Triptych or a Purple Patch was and didn't know where to look? Of course you have and thats why your here reading this poorly written review to see if their in here. Well rest assured there in here along with a plethora of other terms, from the classical age to the modern age, there here all right.
Many of the terms should be well known to students of the Humanities or Philosophy but nevertheless is an excellent resource for both the professional and layperson alike. This is basically a dictionary of terms you will likely encounter into a foray of Philosophy, Humanities, or another such "enlightened science" A nice, brief, entry in the back of the book are the diagrams of buildings from classical and medival times.
I guess the only disparaging thing about the book is the price. Twenty dollars really isn't alot but one would expect alot more from a twenty dollar book(at least my penny pinching budget would). However the book is very well done with clear and consise defintions that make this book a must have for any student of Philosophy or the Humanities, either Classical or Modern.
I suggest, nay, I highly recommend this book to any student of either discipline. Or you should get it if you want to impress your friends, teachers, and loved ones with a dazzling new display of vocabulary (since there are alot of nifty new words in here) that would even impress Spiro Agnew.
