This is a good book. The book is giving concepts in classroom management. The concepts are mainly from the behaviorists point of view.

How do people learn? How can instruction promote learning?Learning andInstruction, second edition, thoroughly and succinctly answers these two fundamental educational psychology questions. The author focuses on the big ideas, preferring that students understand a few exemplary ideas deeply, rather than numerous ideas superficially. The book is research-based and painstakingly shows how specific instructional implications follow from research and theory. Coverage is organized around the two sides of the educational coin, learning in subject areas and instructional methods, that foster meaningful learning. The text uses clear definitions, concrete examples, active learning tasks and a conversational writing style that easily engages readers by addressing them directly.

Brass Performance and Pedagogy Review

Brass Performance and Pedagogy
Average Reviews:

This book is short and sweet. I have been performing and teaching brass performance for a number of years, and this book encompasses several approaches I have learned to brass playing. It is easy to read, functional, and eliminated many aloof ideas about how to play a brass instrument. The work covers everything from breathing, how to develop *your* tone, and even tips and guidance on auditioning. I would highly recommend this book to High School students who want to further thier music education. It will help you build very solid foundation, and help guide you into the many years of music to come. This book should also be in the library of any music educator, whether it be middle, high school, undergrad, advanced, or doctoral studies. It truly is a Brass Bible!

This complete book presents an approach to playing and teaching brass instruments that is based on the fundamental skills of good listening and good respiratory practices. It emphasizes the importance of developing these and other traditional skills—such as embouchure development, articulation, tone quality, range and stamina—through musical ideas rather than isolating on individual muscular behavior. Careful attention is paid to the natural way in which learning takes place in other skills and shows how such processes may be applied to learning to play a brass instrument. Chapter topics cover the art of teaching, listening, developing a concept of sound, posture, breathing, mouthpiece playing, the warm-up, slurring, intonation, endurance, taking auditions, playing high pitched instruments, performance anxiety, and professional ethics. For teachers who deal with brass students at all stages of development.

I use these in a class I'm taking, and they are of good quality overall, with one notable exception. The organization of album names, track names, and artist names on the 13-CD audio set is an utter zoo. Different artist names, some CDs with nothing but numbered tracks with no artist or album name, etc. If you're planning to load these into iTunes or a similar app, be prepared to load one CD at a time, figure out WTH it's called, and then rename it to something consistent.

Classroom Instruction that Works: Research-Based Strategies for Increasing Student Achievement Review

Classroom Instruction that Works: Research-Based Strategies for Increasing Student Achievement
Average Reviews:

I'll keep this short and sweet, and not summarize the contents of the book. Such can be found in other reviews, as well as the editorial synopsis. Instead, let me just suggest that "Classroom Instruction that Works??? is a long overdue work that can be used in a three-fold manner.
First, it should be required reading for every new teacher. It clearly details for them what is effective in the classroom, regardless of grade level. There is little philosophy here. This is ???meat and potatoes??? practicality.
Secondly, the research in this book should become an integral part of every teacher-evaluation process. It provides a model paradigm of excellence in teaching above and beyond the subjectivity extant in most evaluations today.
Finally, this book should be a personal read of every experienced teacher. I cannot express my feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment when I realized--I already do many of these things! While I know I can improve in many areas because of reading this work, much of my teaching was validated by sound research, and that felt good!
It is my hope that this material will be presented at many of the national education conferences I attend each year--in fact, I plan on using much of this in my own presentations.
The book is nicely organized, backed by solid research, and utilizes illustrative scenarios which make complex methodology very understandable. And isn't this the goal of every classroom teacher?
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

In a Field of Words: A Creative Writing Text Review

This is an amazing book! Opening it for teaching ideas (which are abundant and enticing), I find myself reading for pure pleasure, as I would in a rich anthology -- dipping in and out of the book and finding, on every page, something compelling, delightful, and relevant. Different from most creative writing texts, even the authors' exposition is engaging, like a good conversation with trusted teachers who know their students well: know their interests and frames of reference, their misunderstandings and apprehensions about writing, and their needs for a wide range of choices of writing activities. I've been writing and publishing for years, but I'm getting many new ideas for myself, including different ways to keep a journal and kinds of poems I'd never thought about writing. I can hardly wait to share this book with my students.

The Cooperative Classroom: Empowering Learning Review

The Cooperative Classroom: Empowering Learning
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Cooperative learning can be defined as: concepts and strategies for enhancing student-student interaction. Since the 1970s, an impressive body of work on cooperative learning has developed in the areas of theory, research, and practical application. Lynda Baloche's book, "The collaborative classroom: Empowering learning" contributes to this work by bringing together ideas from many different authors in the field, as well as adding ideas of her own.
Lynda is a former classroom teacher who is a university professor helping educate other teachers - both those currently teaching and those preparing to teach - in the eastern U.S. The features of her book I like most are:
1.As mentioned already, the work of many others is synthesized 2. The ideas are illustrated by many examples across a wide range of subject areas and age groups, from kindergarten to senior high school. 3.One of the most useful means of illustrating ideas is through scenarios that show cooperative learning in action in a variety of classrooms. 4.A large number of cooperative learning techniques are described with sample applications. 5.Materials for classroom use are provided. 6.Attention is paid to making cooperative learning work in untracked classrooms. 7.Each chapter ends with cooperative learning activities for teachers to use to review, discuss, and apply the chapter's ideas.
After an initial chapter on the benefits of working together in the classroom and beyond, the other ten chapters are divided into three parts. Part one consists of three chapters that help us understand key psycho-social variables involved in group interaction. Chapter two looks at the classroom as a group and the importance of shared values. The third chapter provides insights on how groups function in the context of multicultural societies, including how status differences among group members arise and can be treated. Chapter four describes the need for cooperation throughout the school and the school community. Among the concepts dealt with here are parental involvement and conflict resolution.
Part one of the book looked at cooperation in a fairly general way. Part two focuses more specifically on cooperation among small groups of students. Five elements are seen as key to realizing the potential of this cooperation. These elements are: positive interdependence, simultaneous interaction, individual responsibility, interpersonal and small-group learning skills, and reflection and planning. The chapters in Part two help us understand how to facilitate the existence of these elements. This is what the author calls the "discipline of cooperation".
Chapter five describes two types of groups and how they function. Base groups last for a year or more, providing a kind of support group for each student. On the other end of the spectrum in terms of duration are informal groups that last only for one activity. The main type of cooperative learning group is called the formal learning group. Such groups are described in Chapter six along with nine ways of fostering positive interdependence among the members of the groups.
Chapter seven offers many ideas for helping students with another of the key elements of cooperative learning: interpersonal and small-group learning skills. The next chapter, eight, discusses the cooperative learning element of reflecting on past learning and planning for future learning, while chapter nine tackles the thorny issues of individual responsibility within groups and assessment of group work. The last chapter in Part two examines teachers' roles in the cooperative learning, such as seating, size and composition of groups, and lesson planning.
The book's final part consists of just one fairly short chapter, but it involves an essential aspect of the implementation of cooperative learning. This part is entitled "Developing commitment to an exciting profession". Among the themes dealt with are cooperation among teachers, teacher inquiry, and developing purpose and vision. After this final chapter, a list of books for further reading is offered in addition to the standard list of references and the subject and author indexes.

This guide for current teachers and future teachers provides them with the necessary skills to create classrooms where cooperation is a way of helping to empower students and themselves as learners. The book answers the difficult questions that teachers often ask about cooperative learning such as, "Why should I use cooperation?", and "When, how, and how much should I use cooperation?". Both pre-service and in-service teachers have extensively field-tested the models, examples, and scenarios featured in this book developed to help them acquire a new understanding and appreciation of the power of working together.

Understanding by Design, Expanded 2nd Edition Review

Understanding by Design, Expanded 2nd Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
With respect to some of the previous reviewers, I really don't think they have done justice to this book. I'll completely expose my inner geek and admit that curriculum design is fascinating to me, and add that I own a considerable number of books on the topic. I am particularly interested in differentiating curricula, and I purchase books about educational theory and classroom ideas the way other women purchase shoes--insatiably. I have constantly challenged myself to create personalized lessons with meaningful learning goals throughout my teaching career, but I will say that this book has definitely changed the way I view teaching and curricular design--and for the better.
I liked this book because it embraces the numerous messy variables that exist in the real world of teaching, and provides a template for you to construct meaningful, integrated learning activities for students. These messy variables include differing student interests and abilities, the struggle to keep activities engaging as well as applicable to important premises of a given discipline, as well as logistical restraints, such as time and access to resources. Other models provide neat flow charts that look beautiful, but often prove unusable given a unique teaching situation (and who doesn't have a unique teaching situation?) This philosophy expects messy variability, and gives a vision and a plan to work with that, instead of hoping everything will turn out neatly.
Here are some of the huge ideas I got from this book. First, it is essential to clarify the "so what?" of whatever you are teaching--the big ideas, the principles of the field, the "It" things you want students to come away with. I have always done this instinctively, but I have not been so great about communicating those principles clearly and repeatedly to students (and parents and colleagues). The idea that students can be actively involved in the philosophy and understanding behind the curricular design (as well as, of course, make choices as part of the lessons), was a light bulb for me. Also, teaching often tends to become scattered with lots of facts and pressure to "cover" information, and clarifying these big ideas and working from there makes intuitive sense--if it doesn't connect to the big ideas you've established as critical, then the lesson doesn't belong. Perhaps these ideas seem like huge "duh" statements, but in the real world of teaching, I think very few people manage to adequately establish the critical issues, articulate and refer to them with students, and connect them to related ideas throughout the term. This book really is a valuable resource for doing the hard, thinking work that teachers really are capable of doing. It provides direction in an environment bound by paperwork and directives that have us running in circles. It is not the idea of backward design that's revolutionary, but the practicality of the technique that aligns so well with what good teachers instinctively know works best.
The reviewer who took issue with the philosophy as being problematic because it was inherently incapable of being truly student-driven raises an interesting point, but I'm not sure it's really a downfall of the book. There are very few schools (with a notable exception profiled on 60 Minutes some years ago) which allow students to determine what they will study based solely on their interests. I appreciate the question, and it's a worthy one to discuss--after all, is it only worthwhile to investigate and learn about things that really interest us? Or should every person be responsible for a core set of knowledge before branching into specialization in a field? Most schools operate with the latter premise and have requisite standards to be met, so a student-driven curriculum is not an option for most teachers. Further, a central tenet of the book relates to designing curricula so that students will "uncover" truths--rather than having a teacher or textbook "tell it" to them--students uncover meaning in an authentic way as it relates to a given topic in a discipline. To me, this is meaning-making--learning--at its best.

The highly anticipated second edition of Understanding by Design poses the core, essential questions of understanding and design, and provides readers with practical solutions for the teacher-designer. The book opens by analyzing the logic of backward design as an alternative to coverage and activity-oriented plans. Though backward from habit, this approach brings more focus and coherence to instruction. The book proposes a multifaceted approach, with the six "facets" of understanding. The facets combine with backward design to provide a powerful, expanded array of practical tools and strategies for designing curriculum, instruction, and assessments that lead students at all grade levels to genuine understanding. The second edition, a refined work, has been thoroughly and extensively revised, updated, and expanded, including improvement of the UbD Template, the key terms of UbD, dozens of worksheets, and some of the larger concepts. The authors have successfully put together a text that demonstrates what best practice in the design of learning looks like, enhancing for its audience their capability for creating more engaging and effective learning, whether the student is a third grader, a college freshman, or a faculty member.
