How do people learn? How can instruction promote learning?Learning andInstruction, second edition, thoroughly and succinctly answers these two fundamental educational psychology questions. The author focuses on the big ideas, preferring that students understand a few exemplary ideas deeply, rather than numerous ideas superficially. The book is research-based and painstakingly shows how specific instructional implications follow from research and theory. Coverage is organized around the two sides of the educational coin, learning in subject areas and instructional methods, that foster meaningful learning. The text uses clear definitions, concrete examples, active learning tasks and a conversational writing style that easily engages readers by addressing them directly.

Fundamentals of Speech Recognition Review

Fundamentals of Speech Recognition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is a comprehensive and excellent introduction to the ever-expanding
field of Automatic Speech Recognition. Starting with models of speech
production, speech characterization, methods of analysis (transforms etc),
the authors go onto discuss pattern comparison, hidden Markov models (HMMs),
and design and implementation of speech recognition systems, right from
isolated word recognition to large vocabulary continuous speech recognition
systems. Neural networks and their use in speech recognition is also presented,
though somewhat briefly.
Rabiner was the author of the first widely-read tutorial on HMMs, so
naturally the presentation of HMMs is one of the strong points of this
textbook. The theory is developed in detail, but in an easy to follow
fashion, starting with the very basics and with plenty of helpful examples.
The implementation is discussed at great length as well, starting with
the simplest of tasks and progressing to the state-of-the-art (circa 1993).
That isn't to say that HMMs are the only good part of this book - indeed,
practically every topic, whether it be perception, transforms, vector quantization
or dynamic programming, is presented with great clarity. This book really is easy to
learn from, with numerous examples and illustrations.
The field of speech recognition is inherently multi-disciplinary in nature,
drawing upon various areas of study, including Physics, Physiology, Acoustics,
Signal Processing and Computer Science, to name but a few. The authors do a
great job of explaining all these facets, as well as the mathematics that
is an essential tool.

The only caveat is that it's now a little old (published 1993), since the
field has been growing by leaps and bounds - so while the basics remain
the same, things have changed and hence what's said here should not be
taken as the last word on the subject.
Perhaps a new edition is due, and would certainly be most welcome.
However, for an excellent, accessible introduction to this exciting field,
this is still a great choice.

I find the information and examples in this text to be exceedingly accurate and useful. Technology is hard to write about because much can change by the time you go to print, but most of what is here still works and is still current. The processes, check lists and methodologies apply to many curricular areas and age groups. Much time can be spent going to links and experiencing the companion web site for a more in depth experience.

The author has written a new and unique text for courses in Computers in Education or Instructional Media and Technology. The purpose of this text is to address what technology teachers should know and be able to do, but the focus is on learners and learning rather than on the technology itself. The book is unique in that it presents the students' learning goals first rather than the technology tool, thereby focusing on the learner and the learning rather than the technology. The examples throughout the chapters present ideas for tasks that can be completed with a variety of tools rather than one specific tool that teachers may not have access to. Each chapter includes a brief summary of research from educational technology, learning theory, and other areas to build a foundation for chapter examples and activities. The chapters also include examples for learning in a variety of contexts and content areas and can be applied easily to teaching other ideas and subjects. A unique chapter (Chapter 9) on teacher productivity helps support future educators in their everyday tasks. The book illustrates what technology-enhanced learning can be like today and prepares teachers and administrators for what may come tomorrow. Some of the pedagogical features in the book include: Cases–These appear at the beginning of each chapter and provide a framework for the chapter discussion that follows. ~These cases are compelling snapshots from real classrooms that help students to connect educational concepts to the real world. ~Related questions within and at the end of each chapter encourage the reader to think critically about the material and its related application to the classroom.Meet the Needs of Today's Students feature–Each chapter contains margin notes to help the readers address the learning needs of ALL students including those with diverse needs and English Language Learners.Meeting the Standards feature–This feature shows how the National Educational Technology Standards connect to the learning goal of each chapter.~Additional state standards are listed on the book's companion website. Tool CloseUp feature–These boxes explore the features of technology tools discussed in the chapter in more detail.Learning Activities feature–Provide opportunities to apply the chapter's guidelines and technology tool discussions to a variety of learning activities related to all grade levels and content areas.

Science, Technology and Society Review

Robert McGinn's new book, was beautifully written, encorperating his personal life into the intracate story of his proffession, Science, Technology, and Society. With gripping Case Studies, to tender personal jokes, this book scores on a list of boring Technology books. Although it gets dense at times, it is an excellent book, and I reccommend it for part of a college course reader

Phase-Locked Loop Circuit Design Review

Phase-Locked Loop Circuit Design
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
You've got to have this PLL book for it's broad range of basics no matter what other more specialized PLL books you acquire. I highly recommend this book. Not a text book. Lots of real world issues discussed, such as jitter, pull, purity, false lock, half lock, jitter generation.
My focus has been building phase-locked loops in to integrated circuits. Analog PLLS. Digital PLLs. Clock recovery PLLs. PLLS with equalizers in front. Software PLLS. This is our most-used and favorite PLL reference book, even though it is not an IC book, it is a PC board level book. Whatever the arcane issue regarding PLL function: noise, false lock, phase linearity range, the author of this book comes through with coverage of it.
A prior reviewer states that this book does not contain frequency-domain negative-feedback-loop control theory analysis or treatment of the charge pump. The book does contain such analysis, but quickly moves away from damping factor and natural frequency to parameters that are more useful in PLL design at the board level. The author's examples are at the system level, the board level, and while there is no charge pump, there is a switched-output equivalent.
It is the only PLL book, out of the 6 that I own, that covers the frequency detector and the many different phase detectors types, each typically applied to different classes of problems solved with different classes of PLLs. There are books with more complete coverage on the implementation of digital signal processing DSP-based PLLs, but for a best general reference on PLL theory and operation, irrespective of implementation type/style, this is your book.
For digital PLLs see: 1) 'Phase Locked Loops: Theory, Design, and Applications' by Best for basic digital PLLs (but beware of a few huge errors such as the equation for the basic 2nd-order ideal integrator transfer function), and 2) 'Phase-Locked Loops for Wireless Communications - Digital and Analog Implementations', which reads like a thesis proving that student author can do the math, but with some more advanced topics, and with the mathematics that follows and supports the leading edge commercial implementations.

This volume introduces phase-locked loop applications and circuit design. Drawing theory and practice together, the book emphasizes electronics design tools and circuits, using specific design examples, addresses the practical details that lead to a working design. Wolaver assumes no specialized knowledge in the area covered, reviewing basics as necessary; makes heavy use of figures to support the understanding of phase-locked loop theory and circuit operation; extensively discusses frequency acquisition means, an intensely nonlinear phenomenon; treats injection locking, a practical and often confounding problem; and takes a unique approach to characterizing the phase-locked loop parameters.

Machine Design Fundamentals: A Practical Approach Review

Machine Design Fundamentals: A Practical Approach

I bought a used copy of the 1983 publication of this book recently. It is excellent. Very good explanations of spur, worm, and helical gears with lots of diagrams and pictures that clearly illustrate the concepts presented. Chapters on mechanical clutches, bearings, sliding bearings, chain drives, springs, fasteners, belt drives, axles, shafts ect. The info presented is practicle and understandable. Good combination of mathmatical formulas and mechanical theory without being academic. Much of the info on gear design and theory is hard to find. Also info on stress and strain, designing for rigidity and strength. The chapters on gears alone easily justify the cost of the book. I wish more technical books were written like this one.
