I think this a very good book since I have Windows XP on my machine and I can use some of it.

The primary goal of the GO! Series, aside from teaching computer applications, is ease of implementation, with an approach that is based on clearly-defined projects for students and a one of a kind supplements package. GO!'s project-based approach clusters the learning objectives around the projects rather than around software features. Teaches students to solve real problems as they practice and learn the features. Ideal for students and individuals seeking an introduction to Microsoft Windows XP.

Structured Design: Fundamentals of a Discipline of Computer Program and Systems Design Review

Structured Design: Fundamentals of a Discipline of Computer Program and Systems Design

This book was the first book to describe Structured Design and remains the most thorough. It improved the way thousands of people designed software. The majority of the concepts that today make up object oriented design are addressed in this book. These include coupling, cohesion, factoring and encapsulation (called information clusters here). The authors Ed Yourdon and Larry Constantine are exellent writers, but this, one of their earliest books, is far from their best work. I still have and occasionally refer to my copy for this book. However, the best book on this subject is The Practical Guide To Structured Systems Design by Meilir Page-Jones.

The Craft of Software Testing: Subsystems Testing Including Object-Based and Object-Oriented Testing Review

The Craft of Software Testing: Subsystems Testing Including Object-Based and Object-Oriented Testing

I'm the senior author of Testing Computer Software, a book that focuses on black box software testing. I have strong opinions about books on testing, and don't recommend them lightly. Brian's book focuses on glass box techniques -- ways that programmers can test their own code. It's an excellent, instructive book.

This reference presents, in detail, an effective,step-by-step, cost-effective approach to software testing that isbased on common practice—with improvements inspired by academictesting research and practial experience. The approach is designedto be gradually adoptable, so that it does not disrupt current work, and it scales down gracefully under schedule pressure. Outlines a systematic process/strategy of software testing that incorporatestest design, test implementation, and measurements of test quality.Explains solid testing techniques in detail and shows how to applythem to testing tasks. Answers such questions as: How do I designtests? What are common tester errors, and how do I avoid them? Howdo I implement tests? How do I know how good my tests are? How doI know when I've tested enough? Features unique coverge of testingbug fixes and other changes. For software developerstesting their own code or designs; indepdendent testers testing someoneelse's code; and testers or developers testing bug fixes and othermaintenance changes.

Engineering Problem Solving with C++ (2nd Edition) Review

Engineering Problem Solving with C++ (2nd Edition)

To motivate you, the book starts with a lovely set of colour plates depicting various important problems that need massive computational power. Like predicting weather and climate, text to speech, voice recognition and space exploration. Indeed, the first examples, about weather, also grace the book's cover.
But the narrative quickly leaves behind the splendour of the plates. The usages of C++ are for raw computational applications. There is no implementation of a GUI. The user interface, to the extent that it exists, is confined to text: stdin, stdout, stderr. What the book tells you in part is that optimising number crunching is a different kettle of fish from writing glitzy GUI applications. Nowadays, many computer books seem to focus on the latter. In this sense, the book is a throwback to texts written before 1990. The need for a book like this has never gone away and it is good that the authors provide us with a fresh reminder.
The book lightly touches on various algorithms. For example, Newton Raphson for root finding, and Gaussian solutions of matrix equations. Mostly, you get an introduction to the capabilities of C++ for attacking problems.
I would recommend section 3.1 on algorithm development as the most important part of the book. It describes how to do top down design of a program. How to decompose a problem into smaller parts, making it easier to attack each part. The use and refinement of pseudocode is illustrated. A closely related task. These are vital general purpose skills for the professional programmer, that you should cultivate.

This is a clear, concise introduction to problem solving and the C++ programming language. The authors' proven five-step problem solving methodology is presented and then incorporated in every chapter of the text. Uses outstanding engineering and scientific applications throughout; all applications are centered around the theme of engineering challenges in the 21st century. Includes major revisions to bring the material up to date, such as new coverage of file streams, includinga discussion of the stream class hierarchy and a discussion of stream state flags; numerous new tables and programming examples aid in error checking. A useful reference for engineers at national labs who want to make the transition from C to C++.

Nancy and Colin have brought forward a Mathematica text of exceptional ease in learning. This text is current and has the same easy flow of information that has become the hallmark of this duo. It is well written for a self learning experience or can be adopted to a class setting. Of special note is the presentation of programming techniques, the book starts with the basics and continues to build the readers ability with Mathematica programming.

For courses using Mathematica in departments of science, engineering, and mathematics. The first edition of this title was THE best-selling Mathematica book of its time (other than the manual that's packaged with the software). It sold over 19,000 units since its publication in 1991. A new release of Mathematica has just hit the market, and this classic title has been revised and updated to accommodate the new release.

Student Edition of MATLAB Version 5 for Windows Review

Student Edition of MATLAB Version 5 for Windows

I think basically, MATLAB was designed to simulate an automated system. This automated system in a real life could be a device of electric, electronic, or mechanic. For students or someone who just begin to learn to design a system (either electrical or mechanical system; or combination of both), I think MATLAB is suitable. The program does not require a lot of "fancy stuff" that the real-life industry use. By simply using ordinary personal computer (either Mac or IBM system), you are already able to do the work.

Because MATLAB was designed for beginners in system design, MATLAB basically only supplies tools for designing a concept (an abstraction). If you need to build a blue print, I suggest that you use a more specific program.

From a concept designing point of view, I think MATLAB has an adequate tools. As a start, MATLAB has building blocks. These building blocks act as a simulation function. The blocks could appear as an abstract mathematical function or appear as a more applicable function needed in electrical or mechanical engineering system design.

MATLAB also has commands to make a simple program. These commands are usually used to be combined with MATLAB 1D, 2D, or 3D image capabilities. With these three powerfull tools, you pratically could design any system or any object.

If you need to do more complex tasks, you obviously need MATLAB's companion: Simulink. With Simulink, you will have more powerfull building blocks; beyond your imagination as a system design beginner!

Be careful when purchasing the Simulink. You need to have a Simulink version that will work properly with the MATLAB version you already have. You do not want to end up like the previous reviewer.

"The Student Edition of Matlab Version 5 User's Guide" bring to us a pratical and easy way apresentation to Matlab. Its language is easy to know. But this book present same fauls for me. It doesn't have exercises for the readers pratice. It show us few examples and repetitives. But they are goods. And, finally, I would like to see more pages about the simulink and blocksets. But in my opinion this book is a good way to you know Matlab and its comands.
