Fundamentals of Software Engineering (2nd Edition) Review

Fundamentals of Software Engineering (2nd Edition)

I bought my first copy of this text in 1992 and it has been my constant companion and mentor ever since. From my early Pascal days in college to J2EE development in present times, I have always found the authors' treatment of the discipline of software engineering to be concise, accurate and relevant to the issues at hand. It is one of those books that code shovellers hate...an uncompromising publication that addresses serious process issues such as requirements specification, rigour, interface design and modularity, and robustness. These matters just refuse to go away, and the authors of this book know it. This book is timeless.

This book provides selective, in-depth coverage of the fundamentals of software engineering by stressing principles and methods through rigorous formal and informal approaches. In contrast to other books which are based on the lifecycle model of software development, the authors emphasize identifying and applying fundamental principles that are applicable throughout the software lifecycle. This emphasis enables readers to respond to the rapid changes in technology that are common today. Principles and techniques are emphasized rather than specific tools—users learn why particular techniques should or should not be used. Understanding the principles and techniques on which tools are based makes mastering a variety of specific tools easier. The authors discuss principles such as design, specification, verification, production, management and tools. Now coverage includes: more detailed analysis and explanation of object-oriented techniques; the use of Unified Modeling Language (UML); requirements analysis and software architecture; Model checking—a technique that provides automatic support to the human activity of software verification; GQM—used to evaluate software quality and help improve the software process; Z specification language. For software engineers.

Assessment and Control of Software Risks Review

Assessment and Control of Software Risks
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The author proposes that we categorize software development risks like the Center for Disease Control categorizes disease. He builds on this theme by discussing risk from the perspective of symptoms, susceptibility, prevention, and therapies. The information is excellent., and is not available in this compact format from any other source (at least that I know of). This book is a 'must' for any manager intent on improving the system development life cycle. /// This book is primarily directed toward knowledgeable software professionals. It assumes you have a good understanding of development theory. Unfortunately, since the book was written in 1993, some information (related to vendor tools and products) is a little long in the tooth. That is the only reason I didn't give the book a rating of '10'. /// I would love to see a yearly update that included new symptoms, new 'diseases', additional therapies, and updated lists of vendor 'cures'. Overall content is first-rate and very relevant, not theoretical. The hard part -- detailed therapy -- is properly left to the reader, but several options are presented

Structured Design: Fundamentals of a Discipline of Computer Program and Systems Design Review

Structured Design: Fundamentals of a Discipline of Computer Program and Systems Design
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book was the first book to describe Structured Design and remains the most thorough. It improved the way thousands of people designed software. The majority of the concepts that today make up object oriented design are addressed in this book. These include coupling, cohesion, factoring and encapsulation (called information clusters here). The authors Ed Yourdon and Larry Constantine are exellent writers, but this, one of their earliest books, is far from their best work. I still have and occasionally refer to my copy for this book. However, the best book on this subject is The Practical Guide To Structured Systems Design by Meilir Page-Jones.

Object Oriented Systems Analysis: Modeling the World in Data Review

Object Oriented Systems Analysis: Modeling the World in Data
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This has the merit of being the first book to consider analysis from an OO pespective, but it does so in a distinctly data oriented way(as the title suggests). It is hard to see how behavioural modelling fits. The companion volume "Object Lifecycles" is essential reading if you want to apply this technique successfully in anything like an OO style.
This might make a good bridge for someone with an IM background moving into OO analysis/design. Other texts address this area much better now and apart from historical interest I can't really recommend it to a newcomer to the field.

This reference describes the semantic modeling of data as atechnique for systems analysis. Authors focus first oninformation modeling itself and the problems to which such amodel applies, and then demonstrates how the model can beintegrated into the software development process. Four fullydeveloped models are included in the appendix.

The Craft of Software Testing: Subsystems Testing Including Object-Based and Object-Oriented Testing

I'm the senior author of Testing Computer Software, a book that focuses on black box software testing. I have strong opinions about books on testing, and don't recommend them lightly. Brian's book focuses on glass box techniques -- ways that programmers can test their own code. It's an excellent, instructive book.

Object-Oriented Programming with Java: An Introduction Review

Object-Oriented Programming with Java: An Introduction
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
An excellent Java introduction book! I've found that this book is well-organized and written very clearly. The author also goes beyond the level of an introduction book to explain the fundamental object-oriented design and programming by using Java examples and concepts. Major core Java packages, classes, and interfaces are also covered in depth. Even though I'm wring Java codes for living now, I still love to read this kind of book: A combination of academia and industry. Another advanced Java book that I've found excellent is "Object-oriented Software Development Using Java" written by Xiaoping Jia. These authors will make you love to learn Java!

Structured Analysis and System Specification Review

Structured Analysis and System Specification
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book on analysis and requirements specification is well worth the read. It really is the classic exposition of structured analysis and it is remarkable how many of the ideas presented are still in use. The only section I found somewhat out of date was the material on data access diagrams, which I have never seen anyone actually use in any shop I have worked with. Otherwise this book would rate 5 stars. The language and style is clear and practical without being patronizing. Examples are plentiful so if you want, you can actually go through each step.If you have done this sort of thing professionally you will find yourself reading rapidly. So much of this work is already a part of your knowledge. With that said, even if you have been working in the field a number of years you will still find information that is new and revealing. As such it is a reference, a review and a tutorial.

Measures For Excellence: Reliable Software On Time, Within Budget Review

Measures For Excellence: Reliable Software On Time, Within Budget
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is somewhat mistitled -- it is more about software project estimation and management than about quality or metrics. But as the estimation practice lead for our software development group I found it insightful and valuable.
The heart of the book is an empirical function relating effort (cost), schedule, and system size, based on thousands of actual software projects. The projects cover a huge range of sizes and come from a variety of problem domains. This equation, together with a Rayleigh-distribution model of staff build-up during the construction phase of a software project, allows prediction of schedule and effort for a given system size, normalized productivity, and staffing pattern.
The value of this model is that it is shown by the authors to be applicable over a very broad range of problem domains and system sizes. It at least has a chance of modeling nonlinear effects such as the "mythical man-month" (total effort goes up fast as you increase the size of the team). And with only two free parameters (process productivity and staff-up rate) it is simple enough to be fitted to your own historical project data without a lot of re-analysis.
A lot of the book is devoted to graphical and pencil-and-paper application of the model, which is not really necessary since an implementation of the model ("Construx Estimate").
The only reason that I did not give the book five stars is that it is a bit dated -- it describes a waterfall lifecycle model, as was probably used by most of the projects in the calibration set. But I think it is still valuable as a source of quantitative guidance for software project estimation.
