Numerical Methods for Engineers Review

Numerical Methods for Engineers
Average Reviews:

This is a very good book. The authors focus very well on the audience they are trying to commuinicate with and they have plenty of well thought out examples. The book is easy to read and has a nice selection of topics. This would make a good textbook or a nice reference. The book does lack much of the mathematical development, but that really isn't the driving force for the text. If you are interested in just the how to's and not really the why then this is a great book for you.

Engineering Problem Solving with MATLAB (2nd Edition) Review

Engineering Problem Solving with MATLAB (2nd Edition)

Review Engineering Problem Solving with MATLAB By Delores M. Etter
I teach numerical methods at B.S. and graduate levels, and have found the book very useful because it introduces the MATLAB operating environment and illustate it by means of engineering problem solving.
We use three tools in our numerical methods courses: advanced programmable calculators, high level language programs and mathematical commercial languages (MATLAB). All three options are important, but we feel that MATLAB provides a powerful and relatively easy way of work in this context.
The part II of the book (numerical techniques) is not a complete coverage of the numerical methods. However, the techniques presented here are well selected and constitute a good basis to apply the operating environment MATLAB. For a numerical methods course, it will be necessary to supplement this material with other books to cover the customary content of this subject.
I like the clear style of Dr. Etter. The examples selected for problem solving are interesting and of diverse areas. The student's opinions are, generally, favorable. Finally, I would like to recommend this book to teachers, students and professionals of engineering who uses the computer for problem solving.

Student Edition of MATLAB Version 5 for Windows Review

Student Edition of MATLAB Version 5 for Windows

I think basically, MATLAB was designed to simulate an automated system. This automated system in a real life could be a device of electric, electronic, or mechanic. For students or someone who just begin to learn to design a system (either electrical or mechanical system; or combination of both), I think MATLAB is suitable. The program does not require a lot of "fancy stuff" that the real-life industry use. By simply using ordinary personal computer (either Mac or IBM system), you are already able to do the work.

Because MATLAB was designed for beginners in system design, MATLAB basically only supplies tools for designing a concept (an abstraction). If you need to build a blue print, I suggest that you use a more specific program.

From a concept designing point of view, I think MATLAB has an adequate tools. As a start, MATLAB has building blocks. These building blocks act as a simulation function. The blocks could appear as an abstract mathematical function or appear as a more applicable function needed in electrical or mechanical engineering system design.

MATLAB also has commands to make a simple program. These commands are usually used to be combined with MATLAB 1D, 2D, or 3D image capabilities. With these three powerfull tools, you pratically could design any system or any object.

If you need to do more complex tasks, you obviously need MATLAB's companion: Simulink. With Simulink, you will have more powerfull building blocks; beyond your imagination as a system design beginner!

Be careful when purchasing the Simulink. You need to have a Simulink version that will work properly with the MATLAB version you already have. You do not want to end up like the previous reviewer.

Applications Programming in C++ Review

Applications Programming in C++
Average Reviews:

Like the other reviewer said, do *NOT* buy this book unless it is required for classwork.
The explanations of many concepts in this book are so poor, you will simply have to buy another book to understand them. It really makes you wonder if the author(s) actually use C++ themselves. It's almost like these guys are really C programmers that couldn't really explain C++ concepts.
The exercises attempt to reinforce concepts within the chapters, but they are so cryptic it will take you a significant amount of time just to determine what they are really asking for. Some of the exercises are 5-minute solutions that require an hour of thought to comprehend the question, because the question is presented HORRIBLY.
For example:
Write a program that computes the sum:
n
E 1/i^2
i=1
(E = summation)
in two ways. First, in the order
1 + 1/2^2 + 1/3^2 + ...
and then in the order
1/n^2 + 1/(n-1)^2 + ...
Use two different functions to compute the sums for n = 10, 100, 1000, and 10000.
------
Ok, assuming you understand the question (many people didn't) the entire point of the problem is to see that the results of the two orders are different over time, for increasing values of n.
The problem is, this exercise doesn't explain this, and if you don't use doubles, your results will be exactly the same for values of n to 10,000.
Stuff like this happens on almost every page of this text.
Again, avoid this book unless you have no choice but to buy it. It will battle you every step of the way.

Introduction to Spectral Analysis Review

Introduction to Spectral Analysis
Average Reviews:

There are many books on spectral analysis and related topics. This book is particular suitable for the people who want to learn this topic by self-studying. The chapters are well-organized and up-to-date. If you have this book at hand, don't forget visiting the book's homepage (you can find the address in the book) and downloading some useful information, including lecture notes and MATLAB files. Those materials are really informative and helpful. I highly recommend this book for textbook in classroom or reference book for researchers.

This book presents an introduction to spectral analysis that is designed for either course use or self-study. Clear and concise in approach, it develops a firm understanding of tools and techniques as well as a solid background for performing research. Topics covered include nonparametric spectrum analysis (both periodogram-based approaches and filter- bank approaches), parametric spectral analysis using rational spectral models (AR, MA, and ARMA models), parametric method for line spectra, and spatial (array) signal processing. Analytical and Matlab-based computer exercises are included to develop both analytical skills and hands-on experience.

Adaptive Filter Theory (4th Edition) Review

Adaptive Filter Theory (4th Edition)

Despite the commonly negative opinion against Simon Haykin's book, I find this book to be a very fun reading. It starts off with a very brief review of DSP (more useful just for getting familiar with the notation, really), properties of random processes, and a small section on linear algebra in the middle of the book.
The rest of the book can be viewed as a story of how different approaches and algorithms were developed, and is a little difficult to use as reference due to its lack of structure and over-dependency on the previous chapters, both for technical content and notation.
But there's a lot of hidden treasures within this book that should have been more emphasized. For example, Mold's theorem that states that any discrete stationary process can be decomposed into a deterministic component and a random component, which are uncorrelated to each other. I'm sorry, but a reference to a proof in another book is not enough to really motivate me. This is a very fundamental theorem if you're interested in stochastic signal processing. Sure, you don't cover the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus in your very first calculus class, but then again this is supposed to be a fairly advanced book.
So if you're interested in learning certain things quickly, this is NOT the book to get. Consider Munson Hayes' book instead. Save this one when you feel like investing a little time to hear Haykin's story on stochastic signal processing.

Adaptive Filter Theory, 4e, is ideal for courses in Adaptive Filters.

Haykin examines both the mathematical theory behind various linear adaptive filters and the elements of supervised multilayer perceptrons. In its fourth edition, this highly successful book has been updated and refined to stay current with the field and develop concepts in as unified and accessible a manner as possible.

I reviewed a number of books before choosing a text for an introductory class on computational techniques for sophomore engineers. I chose this book because it struck a great compromise between the "Introduction to MATLAB" materials and the MATLAB functionality engineers really use (especially chapters 11 and 12).
The examples are thorough and plentiful. Student engineers and anyone new to MATLAB would do well to get this book.

"The Student Edition of Matlab Version 5 User's Guide" bring to us a pratical and easy way apresentation to Matlab. Its language is easy to know. But this book present same fauls for me. It doesn't have exercises for the readers pratice. It show us few examples and repetitives. But they are goods. And, finally, I would like to see more pages about the simulink and blocksets. But in my opinion this book is a good way to you know Matlab and its comands.
