I have used this text book to help train people on the technology and software products that drive the Mechanical Design Software Industry. Kissell's experience and knowledge are well documented by thisbook.
The key strength of this book is the compact yet thoroughcoverage of what matters most to the average reader of this book.That reader is of course, a maintenance mechanic currently working in industry. Many books on these topics are just too wordy and intimidating. Kissell's brevity is helpful without sacrificing content.
The content and graphics are simple and straight forward, not spending too much time getting deep into engineering level discussion. I also like the order in which the material is presented, it has a natural flow that keeps the average reader from having to flip back and forth through the book to make sense of it.
My recommendations to improve the book would be to:
1. Add some additional practice problems and also outline some practical laboratory exercises to reinforce the text.
2. Make references to other material that delve deeper into the theory behind the basics. Something similar to "For more information on this topic...Kissell's other works are equally well written, and prove his capabilities of deeper level discussion on industrial technology. With this book, he has succeeded in writing a book that provides the most essential theories and troubleshooting tips, and avoids material that does not aid in understanding. END

This book covers all the major topics in data communications but does so in a very simplistic manner that barely scratches the surface of any of the topics covered. Of course the breadth of the book is so wide that it would not be possible to cover even a fraction of the topics in any detail. The back of the book says that it is a suitable book for those with a technical background and that the 'shaded areas' go into more technical detail. I found the shaded areas to be just as elementary as the rest of the book, and in many cases doesn't tell the full story. This is a good book if you only want an introduction to telecomm topics, or want a dictionary of telecomm acronyms. It is fairly well written and has some very simplistic analogies for those who might need plain english illustrations of telecomm concepts. The reason I'm giving it a low rating is because I feel the publisher/author is trying to sell this to a technical audience, which I strongly feel it is not suitable for. But if you know nothing about volts, bytes, bits, baud, hertz, etc... then this would be a good place to start.

My son says he loves this book--and that speaks volumes. He is 16 years old and is enrolled in an Auto Technology course. He is also home schooled, and I chose this as his math text for the year. What should have been a definitive work on classical C programming is seriously flawed by the presence of dozens and dozens of errors. The basic idea is excellent: that is, to relate the learning of C to real life engineering applications. A good editor could have made this an excellent text.

This was the required text when I took differential equations back in the early 80s. As a sophomore engineering student, I found the book to be easy to read and easy to learn from. It is especially nice that the book has very few errors/typos in it. I have gone back to this book many times in the intervening years (in graduate school and beyond) and I continue to go back to it as an excellent reference. In fact, the copy that I purchased back in 1982 is starting to come apart and I was happy to see that it is still available.
I am currently an engineering professor and I teach an applied mathematics course to senior level honors students. I find that I frequently go back to Spiegel's book for examples and explanations that I can present to my class when I am covering differential equations. This is still one of the best introductory texts on differential equations that I have come across.

I think basically, MATLAB was designed to simulate an automated system. This automated system in a real life could be a device of electric, electronic, or mechanic. For students or someone who just begin to learn to design a system (either electrical or mechanical system; or combination of both), I think MATLAB is suitable. The program does not require a lot of "fancy stuff" that the real-life industry use. By simply using ordinary personal computer (either Mac or IBM system), you are already able to do the work.

Because MATLAB was designed for beginners in system design, MATLAB basically only supplies tools for designing a concept (an abstraction). If you need to build a blue print, I suggest that you use a more specific program.

From a concept designing point of view, I think MATLAB has an adequate tools. As a start, MATLAB has building blocks. These building blocks act as a simulation function. The blocks could appear as an abstract mathematical function or appear as a more applicable function needed in electrical or mechanical engineering system design.

MATLAB also has commands to make a simple program. These commands are usually used to be combined with MATLAB 1D, 2D, or 3D image capabilities. With these three powerfull tools, you pratically could design any system or any object.

If you need to do more complex tasks, you obviously need MATLAB's companion: Simulink. With Simulink, you will have more powerfull building blocks; beyond your imagination as a system design beginner!

Be careful when purchasing the Simulink. You need to have a Simulink version that will work properly with the MATLAB version you already have. You do not want to end up like the previous reviewer.
