Having taught new teachers for almost a decade I am so pleased to finally have a place where students can get what they need in their first year. They not only hear what to expect but how to work through issues as they arise. I think the format is very user friendly and will not only help new teachers but also remind teacher educators what it feels like to just begin in this crazy profession. The most important aspect of this book is the truth. Dr. Zuckergood does not always say what his new teacher wants to hear (nor does Anne always agree with him) but is honest and upfront with areas of growth. Teacher education needs more of this straight talk when we prepare the next generation of teachers. Excellent book that is now a required text in my introductory course.

This book presents a dialogue of reflective journal entries sent via email between a student teacher and her college supervisor. Miss B is a white, female, graduate student doing her student teaching in an urban high school. Written in a very honest, compassionate, inspiring, thoughtful, and humorous way, her journal illustrates her transformation from a passionate but struggling student teacher to a teacher who has found her voice and the confidence to be an effective teacher in her own classroom. Most student teachers are required to keep a daily reflection/journal. The journal entries in the book are written chronologically and provide an excellent example of what a reflective teacher should look for in trying to improve their teaching.Student teaching is considered to be one of the most important components of pre-service training. It is during these practicums that aspiring teachers apply what they have learned in their courses to the real world in a real classroom. However, many student teachers are unprepared to face the situations they will encounter in urban school settings. Not only will they have to deal with lesson planning, classroom management, working with parents, etc, but also such issues as homelessness, hunger, motivation, and difficult family environments. Miss B makes a lot of mistakes that set her back as well as many decisions that move her forward. Readers of the book will continually be thinking about how they would have dealt with that particular situation as they experience the joys, frustrations, fears, and compromises they may have to confront in their own student teaching.Professors will find this book to be an excellent tool to promote discussions on contemporary critical issues of which pre-service teachers should be aware. To help promote discussion, each chapter ends with Discussion Starters: questions that ask readers to react to key topics discussed in the chapter. The focus is on learning words in context first and then getting definitions, with plenty of reinforcement and "recycling" of words in later chapters. There are tons of activties for each chapter, so it works with lots of teaaching styles (by the book vs. more open-resource). This book was so good that the community college where I teach adopted the rest of the series for our ESL reading program. Definitely worth the money!

The book is organized well and the information is easily understood. Each chapter begins with Learning Objectives, 3 Good reasons why you should care, and Making the case for organizational behavior that introduces the material in the chapter with describing a real organization. If you are serious about your education and want to learn something this book is designed exactly for that. The book has a free companion website for the student and an online instructor resource. The paperback is durable and the book easily fits into one hand. I am using this book for an online course and it is constantly being shoved in and out of my work bag and has held up well. Pleased with purchase.

(More customer reviews)A well organized and thought provoking book, the authors successfully translates Special Education topics into easy to comprehend case studies, sidebars, and resources without overwhelming readers with medical terminology. Each chapter contains a vignette- a short portrait of students, parents and teachers- which humanizes the exceptionality under discussion. Special features include tips for inclusion, effective teaching practices,
evaluation procedures, and resources for further study.
I found the chapter on autism particularly helpful as I had always been confused by the origins of this spectral disorder and did not realize all the variables involved in diagnosis.
I'm particularly grateful that their research and resources are extensive and well organized. There is an interactive website that is a great companion to the book complete with a message board, and chat room. The opportunity to dialog and collaborate with other educators seems essential to working with special needs students and I was happy to see they've created a forum for it online. This book had raised my consciousness and level of sensitivity regarding advocacy for children with special needs. I suspect I will be using it for years to come.

It is comprehensive and contains a huge amount of information on the subject of assessment. You name it it's in this book. The book is also well organized so that you can go straight to any topic you are researching without having to reread the entire book. It is organized into sections that contain chapters about a specific subject. The chaters break the information down into even smaller components so that you only research the subject you are interested in at that particular time, and again you don't have to reread the entire textbook. For example, Part 1 is entitlted How to establish a framework for assessing your students. It contains chapters 2 through 5 explaining in detail how to measure, gather evidence, generalize performance, etc. It's my official go to book for reference and research. I do not intend to sell it back.

It's a little bit expensive, and my professor barely ever referenced it, but it really helped me to understand the class and I am very happy that I bought the book. It's still sitting on my desk at school and I reference it once in a while to help for other classes. Very happy with my purchase!

Chapters begin with the psychological contract (1), theories of managing people (2), individual and organizational learning (3), individual and organizational motivation (4), ethics and values (5), personal growth and work stress (6), and later topics include managing diversity (12), leadership (13), decision making (15), performance appraisal (18), and managing change (20). The pantheon of authors features experts such as Henry Mintzberg, Jay Conger, Denise Rousseau, Ed Lawler, Peter Senge, Cary Cooper, Deborah Tannen, Geert Hofstede, Hank Sims, Victor Vroom, Jeffrey Pfeffer, Ray Miles, and Rosabeth Moss Kanter. There are numerous charts, diagrams, graphs and models. Anecdotes and examples are plentiful. Self-assessments are rare. Few of the readings offer empirical data; the emphasis is on mental models, images, and concepts.
Professors of organizational behavior, looking for readings rather than integrated text, exercises, and cases, as well as a less expensive alternative to traditional college textbooks, will find this book appealing. These authors are, in general, engaging and highly readable. Chapters can be assigned in an order or avoided altogether to please the teacher's preferences. The breadth of topics, the currency of the treatments, and the expertise of the authors provide a solid foundation for the primary college OB course. Graduate students in need of less text structure and faculty in need of less ancillary materials will find the most benefit.
The book is rooted in social psychology and emphasizes perception, learning, thinking, images and personality, e.g., interpersonal communication, attribution, creativity. There is less on the `behavior' side of organizational behavior. Several authors use the device of posing `myths' to contrast with the author's learned, alternative state (`fact'), and sometimes the myths read more like `conventional wisdom' or the author's own attempt to make his or her point more vivid by presenting a myth that exists only in the minds of a few people. For business school students, this reader is more about organizations and people than about business. Business faculty and courses adopting this book will likely want and need to provide a management context.
