Form in Music (2nd Edition) Review

Form in Music (2nd Edition)

Wallace Berry's, Form in Music, is easier to read than other music theory books. The book explains musical forms such as; binary, ternary, rondo and others. Berry uses proper terminology and eplains why other words or phrases should not be used. He clearly defines musical terms and gives a formula for musical forms. He cites many pieces of music to prove or show how the formula is realized. He also explains how some pieces and composers broke the formula. My one complaint about the book deals with these citations. There is not enough musical notation examples to read and look at when Berry refers to a piece. He refers to pieces that are never notated. When dealing with musical form and analysis one needs the music. In Green's Form in Tonal Music, Volume 2 is a whole book full of musical examples. Green, however, is not as readable as Berry.

If you want to appreciate English literature, and perhaps even to write lucidly a work of fiction, then this book affords a useful start. The editors have culled poetry, drama and short stories into one text. Choosing from centuries of classic works.
The best coverage is of poetry. If only for the prosaic reason that poems are usually short. So the editors were able to amass an impressive gathering. Shakespeare, Milton, Frost, Cummings, Plath, Yeats and many other poets figure here. Some of the most piognant poems touch on Death. Showing the attentive reader how poets have attempted to confront it, in timeless manners.

Literature: A Portfolio Edition returns the complementary processes of reading and writing about the different literary genres to the center of the classroom. Only through self-conscious attention to the way in which both student writers and literary texts communicate meaning can students become independent critical thinkers. For this reason, Literature aims to incorporate attention to reading and writing economically into all of its features.

Issues in American Political Life: Money, Violence and Biology (5th Edition) Review

Issues in American Political Life: Money, Violence and Biology (5th Edition)

"Issues" is a must read for any intro. to political science class, and a good read for those wanting to know what the issues in today's political rhetoric are all about. The authors offer a balanced perspective, and leave the reader anxious to find out more. Academic in nature, but universal in scope.

A substantive alternative to typical "issues" texts—which cover too many issues, too superficially—this intriguing and comprehensive text offers a more in-depth and coherent approach to contemporary policy problems and solutions. It provides a conceptual framework in which students can become comfortable actually doing policy analysis, and in learning skills beyond reading about certain political issues. Thematically organized, it looks at nine specific issues grouped into three broad categories that hold an enduring importance in American political life—money and politics, violence and politics, and biology and politics. All nine chapters and their respective topics (campaigns, corruption, welfare, crime, terrorism, arms control, the environment, biomedical issues, and biotechnology) have a strong conceptual base with current political dimensions and policy concerns woven throughout. Students not only learn the context, status, and prospects of issues confronting the U.S. government, but also see how these issues now cross our domestic borders into a global realm.

Short Guide to Writing About Art, A (10th Edition) (The Short Guide) Review

Short Guide to Writing About Art, A (10th Edition) (The Short Guide)

My Art History department adopted this book as its official style-manual a few years ago, and we assign it as a textbook for our writing and methodology class. To my great dismay, however, our bookstore has had some trouble ordering it this year, and so I have encouraged my students to "cut the Gordion knot" by ordering it from Amazon. The chapters on choosing a topic and organizing an argument are, I think, useful and well-written, but the greatest value of this book is Chapters 9 and 10, which provide clear instructions for writing footnotes and bibliography. This may be a mechanical task, but it is a frustrating one for many students, because there are so many possible formats to use (MLA, Turabian, etc.) Barnet's system has the virtue of being designed specifically for research papers about art and art history, and the format he recommends is clear and logical. The book also reprints the instructions for contributors from the Art Bulletin, the most prestigious art-historical journal in this country, and so will be of value for graduate students and recent PhD's preparing their first works for publication.

I had to purchase this book to take a class for composition. My skills are definitely not in the writing side of life, but this book was easy to use. It helped me to put together essays, critiques, and other forms of writing to get me through not only that class, but others that require writing skills. Definitely recommended for those who need some guidance!

Now in itseighth edition, the authorsof Strategies for Successful Writing: a Rhetoric, Research Guide, Reader, and Handbookhave strived to achieve the same steadfast goals that have motivated them from the beginning: create a rhetorically-organized writing guide that combines four books into one convenient and flexible teaching tool while offering students an exceptional value. By having at their disposal a comprehensive textbook that offers ample material for a full-year composition course, instructors teaching a one-term course can make various selections fromChapters 1-17, from whatever types of specialized writing suits the needs of their students, and from the appropriate essays in the reader. As well, because the authors believe strongly that an effective composition textbook should address students directly, they've aimed for a conversational yet clear style that invites students into the book, lessens their apprehensions about writing, and provides a model for their own prose. This style complements the authors'strong student-based approach to writing, and together they help create a text that genuinely meets student needs.

Writing For The Orchestra: An Introduction To Orchestration Review

Writing For The Orchestra: An Introduction To Orchestration
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book on orchestration is very well done. I have gone to it many times. It has some unique touches in the book in regards to suggestions to beginning composers that help get the imagination going. It is unique in other areas such as how long can a certain player hold a note for a given instrument. Gives an insight into the amount of breath that the instrument requires. Has special techniques for each instrument as well. Warns you of using them that will damage an instrument or that are difficult technically. Full of hints like this. Also gets into notational issues where needed. Its a good thorough book written by someone who has been in the orchestra his entire adult life as a composer, conductor and primarily a principle violinist. Recommend it.
