I am just completing a required class using this book. It takes you through our written English language by teaching how to identify each part of speech. This book also teaches correct punctuation, different kinds of phrases, and really makes you dig deep in your subconcious to remember nominative phrases, plurals, numbers used in sentences, etc... It's all the basic English in one book that a person needs for brushing up!

The World is a Text: The Writing, Reading, and Thinking About Culture and Its Contexts (2nd Edition) Review

The World is a Text: The Writing, Reading, and Thinking About Culture and Its Contexts (2nd Edition)

Using poetry, fiction, photos, and essays, the book offers a colorful tour of the subtle and not-so-subtle influences Americans deal with every day, and it guides the reader through the process of 'reading' these 'texts' that make up our world. The texts include not just the written variety but also television, movies, popular music, and public space.
The readings include essays on 'Seinfeld,' 'The Simpsons,' and the Rosie O'Donnell show, in addition to choice works by Neruda, Langston Hughes, Chris Haven, Kate Chopin, and many others. I haven't found a dry one in bunch, honestly, though at first glance I was afraid the section on public space would be a snooze. Not so! It's actually pretty thought-provoking.
The book's pedagogical emphasis is on getting readers to find and analyze the subtexts that run through cultural influences of all kinds and to explore their reactions through writing. I think this aspect of the book is very well done and would be effective in getting students to think critically about the world.
The strange and beautiful (not to mention utterly surprising) thing about this work is that it makes for consistently fascinating reading despite its status as a composition/cultural studies text. I've been leafing through the selections for pleasure reading, and from that perspective, it's an uncommonly tasty collection.
As a reader for a class, I think this book would be tremendously effective, and were I to teach a composition or cultural studies class, it would be my first choice.

The book teaches readers the usefulness of learning to actively "read" their surroundings. The new edition features a greatly expanded section on writing, editing, and making arguments. This cultural studies reader directly engages the process of writing about the "texts" one sees in everyday life. Its comprehensive and inclusive approach focuses on the relationship between reading traditional works–such as short stories, and poems–and other less-traditional ones–such as movies, the Internet, race, ethnicity, and television. For anyone who enjoys provocative and engaging material, and is interested in developing an appreciation for diverse cultural literary works.

Descriptive English Grammar, 2nd Edition Review

Descriptive English Grammar, 2nd Edition
Average Reviews:

This is an old-fashioned English grammar book. Part I (pp. 3-198) contains a history of the English language and a minute examination of the uses of each of the 8 parts of speech, with copious examples. The grammatical status of a phrase like "all things considered" need be a mystery no longer. Part II (pp. 201-438) describes a method of sentence analysis using sentence diagraming. If you are looking at this review, you probably already know what sentence diagraming is. If not, it's a fascinating way to represent graphically how the words of a sentence work together to make sense. Writers who get stuck on a sentence that "just doesn't seem right"--is this a gerund, an adjective clause, an object complement?--can use sentence analysis to figure out what the basic sentence structure is, what's wrong with it, and how to make it right. In short, this book is not for everybody, but for those who delight in how the language works, word for word, it's a treasure trove from a bygone era.

I had to purchase this book to take a class for composition. My skills are definitely not in the writing side of life, but this book was easy to use. It helped me to put together essays, critiques, and other forms of writing to get me through not only that class, but others that require writing skills. Definitely recommended for those who need some guidance!

Now in itseighth edition, the authorsof Strategies for Successful Writing: a Rhetoric, Research Guide, Reader, and Handbookhave strived to achieve the same steadfast goals that have motivated them from the beginning: create a rhetorically-organized writing guide that combines four books into one convenient and flexible teaching tool while offering students an exceptional value. By having at their disposal a comprehensive textbook that offers ample material for a full-year composition course, instructors teaching a one-term course can make various selections fromChapters 1-17, from whatever types of specialized writing suits the needs of their students, and from the appropriate essays in the reader. As well, because the authors believe strongly that an effective composition textbook should address students directly, they've aimed for a conversational yet clear style that invites students into the book, lessens their apprehensions about writing, and provides a model for their own prose. This style complements the authors'strong student-based approach to writing, and together they help create a text that genuinely meets student needs.

Reading Literature and Writing Argument (4th Edition) (Myliteraturelab) Review

Reading Literature and Writing Argument (4th Edition) (Myliteraturelab)
Average Reviews:

While this book is listed implying that it includes the MyLiteratureLab access, it does NOT. In fact, when I got the book, very promptly I might add, I looked at the back cover and it discusses the benefits of MLL and states "To order this book with MyLiteratureLab access at no extra charge, use ISBN 0-205-71991-0." Looking up this ISBN on Amazon yielded zero hits; ie: they don't have it. So, while the seller did provide a new book in great condition with very prompt delivery, the reference to it including the MLL access should be removed.
