I was upset that I bought this just two days ago and it then dropped price by $7 when I checked today. However, it is a good book for those who speak Spanish, but have room for improvement. It's an easy read and simple to understand. I would recommend it.

Methods for Teaching Foreign Languages: Creating a Community of Learners in the Classroom Review

Methods for Teaching Foreign Languages: Creating a Community of Learners in the Classroom

I would highly suggest this text for any beginning French teacher. It is a necessity for any teacher who would like to learn the teaching methods that are effective and appropriate in the modern foreign language classroom. The book focuses on the communicative classroom, which is an environment created by the teacher that is the most conducive to language learning. Chapter 5 is especially useful because it includes a discussion on assessment and includes sample rubrics. The largest portion of the book explains 3 modes that comprise the overall goal of communication: interpersonal, interpretive and presentational (direct interaction with others, cultural interpretation of meanings, and presentation and expression of ideas). Each chapter that covers an individual mode provides an explanation of the mode itself and also the activities that will help the student to gain skills within each mode.
I was introduced to this book through a methods course that I took as a first year teaching assistant (the first time that I taught French). Although it was used in a master's program, the book is very accessible and also very practical.

I am a Spanish language teacher at a college in Australia. For the past teen years this book has been my Bible in organising my classes. And my sever when I have to look for any answer to those questions that arise once in a while, that I'm not sure of the answer. I had try lots of different books to review, but nothing goes as good explaining the difficult grammar as this books does, using the most simplicity to explains it, you can expect any simpler. I'm Spanish born person.

Vistas y voces latinas (3rd Edition) Review

Vistas y voces latinas (3rd Edition)

Using this book as a Junior in High school, I can say that this book can be helpful, but in the end it will depend on how your teacher ultimately ends up using it. For example, the stories covered in this book are typically read at the college level, and followed by exercises spanning multiple pages. This is both beneficial and constricting at the same time. While completing these exercises (Such as filling in the blank, writing your own opinion of the story, etc.) will definitely help you to understand and reflect more deeply on the story presented, they can be easily overwhelming if your grasp of Spanish is not advanced enough. If this book is required reading for your class, ask your teacher how she plans on using it. Otherwise, you will be surprised how challenging it might be.
Bottom line: I would recommend this to more advanced or serious Spanish students.

Readers investigate the cultural topics of each chapter in this anthology of readings by both new and established contemporary Latin American and Latino authors—including Gabriel Garcîa Mårquez, Pablo Neruda, and Silvina Ocampo. In this way, readers can analyze literary selections through discussion and short compositions, write creatively in Spanish, and expand their knowledge of Latin American and Latino culture. Offers new selections by well-known contemporary authors such as Sandra Cisneros, Gustavo Pérez Firmat, Angeles Mastretta, and more. Opens each chapter with a poem. Offers interviews or autobiographical essays with each author. Provides a new vocabulary section that contains useful Spanish expressions and terms. Ideal for readers with conversational Spanish skills who want to expand their knowledge of Latin American and Latino literature, or readers who want to increase their conversational and reading skills in Spanish.

Product came quickly and in EXCELLENT condition. Seller said "like new". And with the exception of the very tip of the corner of the cover pushed in a little (probably from falling), the book was brand new. Other visibly used books were the same price.

Vacaciones al sol Review

Vacaciones al sol
Average Reviews:

I downloaded the audio book. There is an introduction where each character says a little about themselves. The chapters are short, about 1-3 minutes long and there are about 24 chapters. The characters use the Spanish accent (th sound for the letters c and z) and don't slow down. While the vocabulary isn't very hard if students aren't used to speakers from Spain, they will find it difficult. There's the same musical interlude between chapters with some cool piano music. On my player there were only 6 tracks, with multiple chapters. It was annoying that the breaks weren't at chapter endings for the tracks.
If a teacher is thinking about using the audio book here are my warnings/cautions. The characters drink beer. There are a few, very brief, references to "adult" things that detectives investigate, such as someone's wife in a bikini with someone else at Mallorca but nothing in depth. There is also a reference to the bad guys having cocaine. The bad guy does try to drown Lola Lago. Some things common to Spain are refered to but not explained, such as newspaper names and places. You will probably have to pause and explain or preview and tell them the cultural info before the next chapter.
The mystery itself is engaging for adults and probably middle school and up.

Spanish for Reading and Translation Review

Spanish for Reading and Translation
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Spanish for Reading and Translation by Annette Cash and James Murray is said to be designed for graduate students who need to demonstrate a reading knowledge of Spanish as a requirement for a graduate degree; it presents concepts for RECOGNITION only, followed by AMPLE activities and reading .
The organization of the 12 chapters is as follows :
* a reading passage preceded by pre-reading activities focused on skimming and scanning, followed by post-reading activities
* vocabulary building information and exercises
* grammar rules and exercises
* a final reading passage, preceded by pre-reading activities to engage the student in the skills of skimming and scanning, then post-reading activities focused on translation and content
There are No exercises to PRODUCE grammatical structures , the exercises are there to RECOGNIZE the grammatical structures.
The readings increase in difficulty throughout chapters.
A preliminary chapter focuses on pronunciation , reading strategies, cognates, and use of the dictionary.
The text includes three built-in review chapters after 1-4, 5-8, and 9-12.
A very detailed index is provided, together with ( in my opinion a real TREASURE ) an appendix on reading and translation resources : dictionaries, newspapers, magazines, and journals.
A total of 174 pages , rather dense, and I would suggest you take the time(30 days) to go through and not rush.
All that said, in about one month of regular daily study, you will achieve the results promised. I know I did TREMENDOUSLY improve my Spanish reading of academic texts.
I have completed about 60% of the book and here is a sample of what I am able to read : " Las mujeres de esa ciudad (Chiapas) se quejan constantemente de una flaqueza de estomago tan grande, que no podrian acabar de oir una misa rezada y mucho menos la misa mayor y el sermon sin tomar una jicara de chocolate bien caliente y alguna tacilla de conserva o almibar para fortalecerse. "
Two missing features of this book : answers are not given for the exercises though it should be easy to get them on your own if you really study the text; the second feature not related to the text is the high price for the book; it should have been retailed around 20 dollars to increase its sales .
But you will get the results promised and that is why I granted 4 stars.

AP* Spanish Preparing for the Language Examination, Third Edition: Student Edition (softcover) Review

AP* Spanish Preparing for the Language Examination, Third Edition: Student Edition (softcover)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book has been fully updated and reflects the changes made to the 2007 AP Spanish Language exam. In this book, Jose Diaz gives you ample practice for each section of the new exam.
For the multiple choice section: The listening practice is comprehensive with numerous long and short audio selections. There are more than 40 reading sections to practice and perfect your reading comprehension skills. The questions reflect the new item types that will be part of the new exam.
For the free response section: There are several pages of fill-in practice for both fill-in sections: with root words and without. Several prompts are given for the email/letter test section (32 to be exact). There is also ample practice (17 total) for the new integrated skills essay, where students read 2 articles and listen to an audio source. For the speaking sections, there are 20 practice sections for the new directed dialogue/phone conversation test items and 20 for the new simulated in-class presentation--here students must read an article and listen to an audio source combining the two in their 'in-class presentation' of 2 minutes.
This book is really all you need to be well-prepared for the AP Spanish exam starting in May 2007.
What are the drawbacks to this book? Unless you buy the Audio CD's, sold separately and from the publisher, you can't really practice the audio sections. Without the teacher's guide, also sold separately and from the publisher, you won't know if your answers are correct for the multiple choice and fill-in sections. If you're not in a classroom setting, you won't know if the essay or short letter you have written or if your dialogue and in-class presentation are on track for the score you want. The latter is true of any other test prep book on the market.
All in all, I would say that buying this program is well worth the money; especially since this is one of the few test prep books that has actually been changed to reflect the new 2007 AP Spanish exam.
