(More customer reviews)I would highly suggest this text for any beginning French teacher. It is a necessity for any teacher who would like to learn the teaching methods that are effective and appropriate in the modern foreign language classroom. The book focuses on the communicative classroom, which is an environment created by the teacher that is the most conducive to language learning. Chapter 5 is especially useful because it includes a discussion on assessment and includes sample rubrics. The largest portion of the book explains 3 modes that comprise the overall goal of communication: interpersonal, interpretive and presentational (direct interaction with others, cultural interpretation of meanings, and presentation and expression of ideas). Each chapter that covers an individual mode provides an explanation of the mode itself and also the activities that will help the student to gain skills within each mode.
I was introduced to this book through a methods course that I took as a first year teaching assistant (the first time that I taught French). Although it was used in a master's program, the book is very accessible and also very practical.
