I originally used this book, in unpublished form, as a freshman in Dr. Siska's course. As a senior I helped to teach from this book by holding extra help session for Dr. Siska. Since then, I have had the opportunity to teach from two other general chemistry books. Dr. Siska's University Chemistry is the most physically oriented general chemistry book you are likely to come by. His general approach allows for any budding young chemist to gain an impeccable understanding of the physical foundation of chemistry. Additionally, this text does not read like most introductory texts. Dr. Siska's humor and love for the history of science shine through. I looked back at the unpublished versions of this text many times during my undergraduate education and obtained a hard cover version as soon as I could. I highly recommend this book.

(More customer reviews)I find Robbins's OB one of the best introductionary books for OB. Though it does not contain lots of case studies, to get started with concepts, the easy to read layout and the interesting activities that he presents makes it a very good book to get started. I personally started my OB with a much more detailed book, but after I found this one, I used this as the starting point, to get the ideas, and then used more high level books to explore further.
Why not 5 stars, well, coz as I said, I did need to look at other books to explore in detail!

It has some unique touches in the book in regards to suggestions to beginning composers that help get the imagination going. It is unique in other areas such as how long can a certain player hold a note for a given instrument. Gives an insight into the amount of breath that the instrument requires. Has special techniques for each instrument as well. Warns you of using them that will damage an instrument or that are difficult technically. Full of hints like this. Also gets into notational issues where needed. Its a good thorough book written by someone who has been in the orchestra his entire adult life as a composer, conductor and primarily a principle violinist. Recommend it.

(More customer reviews)Well it's finally here! The long awaited 5th edition. It was worth the wait. They went back to the basics and didn't miss a beat. All the things they took out of the 4th edition are back plus more and it's well explained. They covered each subject in more depth than ever before. In this particular edition they added first aid for firefighters and Haz-mat/Decon. You won't be a Haz-mat tech or an EMT after reading it but it covers enough. It's pricier than earlier editions but it comes with its own study guide on CD. Well worth the price. The other edition only covers the firefighting aspect without the first aid and haz-mat. Go out and get yours today! You won't be disappointed.
