As a nursing instructor I highly recommend this book to my students. Nursing students have very little spare time to spend sorting through a textbook looking for "important" information. This book takes all of the guesswork out of reading the text. My suggestion is to read your textbook but study from this book and then refer to the text for further clarification if neccessary.

Prentice Hall Nursing Reviews & Rationales: Medical-Surgical Nursing (2nd Edition) Review

As a first year RN student, writing care plans was difficult. This book makes it so easy! It gives you the description of the disease, the etiology and pathophysiology, assessment, priority nursing diagnosis, planning and implementation, client teaching/education, expected outcomes and evaluations and medication information. At the beginning of each chapter are objectives, a pretest, an overview of anatomy and physiology of the system, diagnostic tests and measurements, common nursing techniques and procedures and nursing management of the client who is having/had surgery. The chapters conclude with a case study and a posttest. Both pre and posttests come with answers and rationals, which I find extremely helpful in understanding why you would do this but not that. Online help is also available but I have not used it or the cd which comes with it. One final note, Gulanick/Myers Nursing Care Plans (6th Edition) is another fantastic book for care plans! Hope this helps!

I honestly would not have passed my OB rotation without this book.
This text explained the concepts and vital details of maternal/newborn nursing. By only reading and in some cases answering the chapter questions, my understanding of this subject increased to the point that I went from below passing grades to a star of the class. This should be a required book at my college, and I;m sure that it would be helpful in any program.

As much as I love my psych text book, I found this book to be very helpful as a Cliff Notes-type supplement. It is concise and easy to read, and the CD that goes along with it works in my Mac and is totally awesome! You can go through pre and post test questions on line, just like within the chapters, as well as check out some NCLEX stuff. All of this was very helpful for exams and just plain learning.
Love it and highly recommend it for supplementing your studies!!

Pharmacology: Reviews and Rationales (Prentice Hall Nursing Reviews & Rationales Series) Review

I have always really enjoyed the Review & Rationale series but this was the first book that fell a little short for me. I am not giving this book a bad review because it is a good book; it is organized, clear, and easy to understand. This book probably would have been more helpful to me when I was in nursing 101 or Med/Surg. I purchased this book during my final semester in nursing school while taking a critical care class. Most of the medications I learned about in critical care were not covered in this book which I didn't realize when I made the purchase. I spoke with another nursing student in my class who also has this book and she agreed: OK book but not a favorite. I don't exactly know why but I always reach for other references first before looking at this book. Perhaps one should look through a copy of this book before buying it to make sure it fits your specific needs.

Prentice Hall's Reviews & Rationales: Comprehensive NCLEX-RN(R) Review Review

Prentice Hall's Reviews and Rationales: Comprehensive NCLEX-RN(R) Review

I have 8 NCLEX-RN review books and this is my favorite. This is a very comprehensive review of what they taught in Nursing school, so it seems overwhelming at first. But, it has a great feature--the content that shows up in NCLEX tests most often is highlighted with an exclamation point in the margin. So, you can review the content with the exclamation points and feel fairly confident that you're studying what usually shows up on the test. This is also a great book to have while in school. For example, after you study Cardiovascular disorders in theory, you can review the Cardio disorder chapter and the Cardio pharmacology chapter. Each chapter has a section of NCLEX-style questions with rationales, so you get good experience answering NCLEX-style questions while you're in school. There is a separate section of pharmacological and parenteral therapies that is wonderful. If you just need to brush-up on meds, you can go to this section. Some of the pharmacology chapters are: Dosage Calculations, Peds Dosage calculations, IV therapy, Blood Therapy, TPN, Maternal and newborn meds., psychiatric meds., respiratory meds., Cardio meds., etc. I've read that NCLEX tests ask more pharmacology questions now, so I appreciate these medication-specific chapters. The tables and charts are also very concise and complete. All-in-all, this book was easy to read and has everything (content-wise) that you need. I haven't taken the NCLEX-RN test yet, but did well on the HESI predictor test that they made us take right before graduation. I know that as a nurse, I will also use this Reviews and Rationales book to review content that I'm starting to forget. Definitely worth the money--probably the best Nursing book I've bought.
