Prentice Hall Reviews & Rationales: Nursing Fundamentals (2nd Edition) Review

Just completed my first semester of Nursing school, and could've scored a "B" using just this book and all the other online content assigned to class. This means I could've avoided reading the main textbook by Craven altogether! Our teacher was heavy on Nursing Behavior and light on Patient Pathology. This book did a much better job than the main text for test preparation. Each chapter has 20 questions with rationales, but the CD adds another 30 NCLEX questions per chapter, so over 500 questions total included.

My Nursing Instructor initially recommended this book last semester and now it is part of the required books for this semester. It is an excellent study guide and helped me get a high grade in Adults Health II. I learned a lot from it and will use it to study for NCLEX. Saunders NCLEX study guide is good also.

Clearly separating the overwhelming array of medical-surgical nursing content into manageable sections as they are taught and tested, Med-Surg Success provides core medical-surgical concepts with related NCLEX-style questions. Like the NCLEX itself, the questions are presented at the application and analysis level, and address the nursing process, management, prioritizing, and medications: critical thinking and how it relates to test taking is emphasized throughout. Organized by body system and specific diseases, Med-Surg Success builds on the successful skills and strategies that have already helped thousands of students in Fundamentals Success and Test Success . The disorders chapters provide practice questions focused on the disease process and a comprehensive exam that includes the processes covered in the practice questions along with other topics involving the system addressed. Other chapters similarly cover emergency, perioperative, and cultural nursing; alternative health care and end-of-life issues; and the last chapter before the comprehensive final exam includes questions and test-taking hints specific to pharmacology and the administration of medications. I have 8 NCLEX-RN review books and this is my favorite. This is a very comprehensive review of what they taught in Nursing school, so it seems overwhelming at first. But, it has a great feature--the content that shows up in NCLEX tests most often is highlighted with an exclamation point in the margin. So, you can review the content with the exclamation points and feel fairly confident that you're studying what usually shows up on the test. This is also a great book to have while in school. For example, after you study Cardiovascular disorders in theory, you can review the Cardio disorder chapter and the Cardio pharmacology chapter. Each chapter has a section of NCLEX-style questions with rationales, so you get good experience answering NCLEX-style questions while you're in school. There is a separate section of pharmacological and parenteral therapies that is wonderful. If you just need to brush-up on meds, you can go to this section. Some of the pharmacology chapters are: Dosage Calculations, Peds Dosage calculations, IV therapy, Blood Therapy, TPN, Maternal and newborn meds., psychiatric meds., respiratory meds., Cardio meds., etc. I've read that NCLEX tests ask more pharmacology questions now, so I appreciate these medication-specific chapters. The tables and charts are also very concise and complete. All-in-all, this book was easy to read and has everything (content-wise) that you need. I haven't taken the NCLEX-RN test yet, but did well on the HESI predictor test that they made us take right before graduation. I know that as a nurse, I will also use this Reviews and Rationales book to review content that I'm starting to forget. Definitely worth the money--probably the best Nursing book I've bought.
