Rodolfo Usigli (1905-1979) is not only Mexico's finest playwright, but El gesticulador (The Gesticulator 1938) is also one of his best plays. The work depicts the life of a disenchanted history professor who leaves Mexico City with his family, and returns to his hometown in northern Mexico hoping to capitalize on the upcoming gubernatorial elections. Circumstances beyond his control lead him to assume the identity of a revolutionary general by the same name, César Rubio. Amidst the confusion, he becomes the people's hero and is elected to run for governor of the state against a former acquaintance that also happens to be the town's villain. The family members play supporting roles: Elena is the dedicated wife and mother; his son Miguel is a young man distraught by his father's failures and by social hypocrisy; and his daughter Julia, is an unattractive, yet seductive young woman who idolizes her father and is interested in social and physical appearances. In a gesture typical of many of the works of the Mexican Revolution, César Rubio is killed before he gets the opportunity to win the elections. While Rubio's death gives his contender the perfect opportunity to look good by honoring the dead hero, it robs Julia of the possibility of gaining a higher social status and leaves Miguel clamoring for Truth. For her part, Elena's resigned nature and sense of dignity allow her to request nothing but her husband's body.

Plain Language Pleadings Review

Plain Language Pleadings

This book is a must for legal writers, whether legal secretaries, legal assistants, or lawyers. Many times I have had to draft a motion or some other court document and just needed something to get me started. Voila! There it was in her book. I keep it handy at all times. Also important is her explanation of the different styles of pleadings. I've never seen it explained anywhere else. This is a godsend when a lawyer asks, "Which is the correct format?" Since I started using her book and following plain language principles, I've talked with several judges about it. They say plain language pleadings are just as "legal" as the wordy ones and when lawyers use plain language, it helps the judges plow through the daily mounds of paper they must deal with. These judges tell me that if more lawyers would read and follow Carol Ann's book, the judges would be much happier to see them in their courts!

Practice of Public Relations, The (11th Edition) Review

I've been using this book for about a year, as a professor teaching Public Relations. I like it, and the students always say it's a great book. It has just enough theory, plus a lot of practical application. The high point, and what students like best, is the series of case studies. There's one in each chapter, 20 in all. I know from personal experience, having spent 15 years as a "PR Man," before turning professor, that these cases are real-life examples of what to do, and especially, what not to do! Entertaining and interesting, while still being an excellent text. Much better than other books sometimes used for Public Relations courses.
