I am currently using this book as the text for a course entitled "Introduction to Archaeological Methods and Theory." I find this book to be very informative, and it adds detail to my prof's lectures quite well. It covers a broad range of topics within archaeology, without assuming that the reader knows nothing. It appears to be written with the understanding that the student will have at least a rudimentary knowledge of some of the topics presented. The only downside is that in order to do the review questions for each topic, you must access the website.
All in all, am excellent book!

I was first introduced to Brian Fagan when I purchased an audio cassette program from "The Learning Company" on ancient Rome. Professor Fagan brought the subject alive in a manner I had never experienced before. The history was compelling, exciting, and I learned more about ancient Rome than from any other single source. Since then I have read many of his books, and I have found "Ancient Lives" to be a wonderful introductory text to the science and appeal of archaeology. I have purchased several copies for friends. It absolutely, positively does not read like a textbook. This is archaeology at its best!

This wide-ranging introduction to the most fundamental principles, methods, and theoretical approaches of archaeology, combined with coverage of the major developments of human prehistory, is a book for complete beginners. The second half is summary of the major developments of human prehistory: the origins of humankind and the archaic world, the origins and spread of modern humans, the emergence of food production, and the beginnings of civilizationWritten for people who want to know more about archaeology and prehistory, not necessarily with a view to becoming a professional archaeologist.

Have you ever wondered how pieces of long lost civilizations find a home in museums? Perhaps a dashing hero discovered them while escaping enemies? No. Real archaeologists spend countless hours researching information on a particular subject and only then does on-site excavation begin.
This book is for those that want to know more. Brain Fagan takes a subject that many are interested in and actually puts it into perspective. Most people don't understand the numerous factors that are involoved in archaeology. The book provides a wonderful introduction to those willing to get their feet wet.
I highly recommend this book to the armchair archaeologists that want to know more about the craft and science. This is a great pre-requisite to The Oxford Companion to Archaeology (a book edited by Fagan as well).

The textbook I received from this seller was in great condition. Buying through Amazon is certainly better than paying $100+ for the same textbook in the bookstore. I appreciate the availability this seller provided for me. I hope that, in the future, this seller can do the same for other people.

This is a good tgext as far as text books go. Fagan is very clear and failry easy to read. He covers all the basic a perosn would need to have at this basic level. He really works to make us understand why Archaeology is still important to people in the present day.
