Prebles' Artforms (10th Edition) (MyArtsLab Series) Review

Prebles' Artforms (10th Edition) (MyArtsLab Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just puchased the latest edition of Artforms which includes the CD-ROM with interactive explanations on elements of art. Artforms is a great introduction to art and art history for those who have always wanted to understand how to look at art and interpret it for themselves. Over half the book is dedicated to elements and principles of art and craftsmanship. I use this book in training my art museum volunteers so that they have a clear understanding of why some works of art have strong visual impact while others do not. I like how the book uses a mix of artwork from various time periods, media and cultures to explain the elements and principles. Far too many art/art history books become a history of painting, and Artforms represents a variety of art forms other than 2D. The history portion of the book is a gloss of art history, but good enough for someone just delving into art. The book is easy to read, relatively jargon-free and has a nice glossary at the end. I wish the CD had more information on it that you could use in a classroom setting, projecting it on an overhead, but that is my instructor point of view. For someone studying at home it is quite nice. To sum up, the book is so good I now own two editions and will continue to recommend it to people who want to understand how to look at art.

Prebles' Artforms continues to lead the field with its steadfast focus on contemporary art, global artists, and cutting edge technology for the art appreciation classroom. We form Art. Art forms us. The title of this book has a dual meaning. Besides the expected discussion of the various forms of art, the title also reflects the fact that art does indeed help to form us as people. As we create forms, we are in turn formed by what we have created. Several years ago, the title was changed to Prebles' Artforms, acknowledging the pioneering contribution of the original authors, Duane and Sarah Preble, to the study of art. Their vision and spirit have touched hundreds of thousands of students who have studied this book. Artforms grew out of a desire to introduce art through an engaging visual experience, and to expose students to a culturally diverse canon of work. It is written and designed to help readers build an informed foundation for individual understanding and enjoyment of art. By introducing art theory, practice, and history in a single volume, this book aims to draw students into a new or expanded awareness of the visual arts.Beyond fostering appreciation of major works of art, this book's primary concern is to open students' eyes and minds to the richness of the visual arts as unique forms of human communication and to convey the idea that the arts enrich life best when we experience, understand, and enjoy them as integral parts of the process of living.

Prentice Hall Algebra 1: Practice Workbook Review

What's awesome about this workbook? The problems. The combination of problems. The way you have several skills on one worksheet - ends up saving paper and shows development of concepts. Some skills have very interesting types of problems that aren't in the Algebra textbook my school provides. This textbook remains my absolute favorite Algebra 1 resource. I'm not quite as fond of its Algebra 2 counterpart, but I use that workbook too. In my opinion, the only difficulty with this workbook is that it doesn't have an answer key. Of course anyone worth their Algebra salt can easily work the problems out, sometimes it's helpful when time is short to have a key handy. I thought the answers might be in the TE, but I don't see them in mine. Hmm.

LATEX Notes: Practical Tips for Preparing Technical Documents

I bought this book in 1996 when I entered graduate school and have utilised it as a reference while writing all my research papers as well as my dissertation. I also have "The LaTeX Companion" by Goossens et al., but this book is much more useful to me. At about 170 pages, it crams everything you need into a very short amount of space, including info on fonts, tables, math, formatting, etc. The chapter on large documents was invaluable to me when I was preparing my dissertation. Furthermore, the last chapter has a number of cool macros that have come in pretty handy.
Note that this is not a beginner's book on LaTeX, nor does it exhaustively show all the extremely cool bells and whistles that LaTeX can do; this book serves as a concise reference and list of hints and tips for using the key markups. When I write a paper, I like to concentrate on the actual content I'm writing about rather than how to format the text. However, when I do need to format text just right, I turn to this book, and it has never let me down.

Just a few years ago, LaTeX set TeX users free.LaTeX liberated them from mundane chores such as formatting and equation numbering, allowing writers to concentrate instead on the document content. Now, to help those who wish to take an extra step beyond the structures imposed by LaTeX, author J. Kenneth Shultis presents a collection of proven tricks, techniques, and recipes for harnessing the full potential afforded by this powerful typesetting program.

Linear Systems Review

Linear Systems
Average Reviews:

This book is that dangerous combination of being theoretical without being rigorous. It's very deep and subtle, and it is not unusual to ponder a particular point for several weeks, as no derivation or explanation is given. Many statements are just thrown out there for the reader to figure out for himself. I have now read the book more or less from cover to cover, and that's how it has been, but I have to say, in the end it is worth it. I now truly feel that I know a lot about linear systems.
It's really not possible to read this book without having a number of other references around: linear algebra (Strang), abstract algebra (Artin), control theory (Brogan) and multivariable systems (Kaczorek) were most useful to me.
This book is excellent in that you will find results in here that you would not find anywhere else, including recent results and some developed by Kailath himself. On the other hand, frankly, the somewhat haphazard presentation style is a real impediment to understanding. In summary, this is a very good book, but you will have to work very hard to get something out of it.

Unlike other workbooks that only have problems but no lessons or examples, this has some of both. The lessons are in the first section and the practice problems comprise the second section. This is a good supplement to the text but can't stand alone. You will likely need the text to understand the both lesson and practice sections.

I took Inan's class, and first saw this book as a collection of course notes. It was an excellent course, and an excellent set of notes. I purchased the text as soon as it became available. This is my primary reference for Waveguide theory. It does an excellent job treating the fundamentals of waves in a practical format. The text is easy to read, and has many examples. It is a good text to have as a reference and has enough examples to teach (or reteach) yourself.

Approaching Quantum Computing Review

Approaching Quantum Computing
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are a number of good books about quantum computing around. Unfortunately, because it has a number of errors, and because the explanations are not always clear, this is not one of them. I know somebody who, after reading this book's section on superdense coding and teleportation, ended up more confused than he started out. This is because not only is teleportation presented using a forest of bewildering 8x8 matrices (correct, but only useful if this is explained well), but the words accompanying these matrices are actually wrong. For example in superdense coding Alice is said to send Bob a quantum bit in a state described by a 4-dimensional vector. This vector actually describes the joint state of Alice and Bob's quantum bits, and there is no way to describe Alice's quantum bit alone. This is a very important distinction to make if you want to comprehend the material, and this book does not make it here. We also learn that in teleportation, "The transfer of quantum information appears to happen instantly, though Bob needs to first receive classical information regarding the result of Alice's measurement before validating his own result." I'm not even sure what this sentence is trying to say. What does validating mean in this context?
The definition of uniformity is wrong. The authors do not appear to understand the concepts behind this definition, or if they do, they are incapable of communicating these concepts to the reader.
In the factoring algorithm, the second condition in the definition of order of r modulo N is incorrect. First it has a 1 in the right-hand-side, and the authors meant to put a 0 there. Second, this condition does not belong in the correct mathematical definition of order. And finally, they don't need this condition since they don't seem to use it anywhere. To make matters worse, Figure 5.10, which illustrates the factorization process for 21, shows 1 times 11 being equal to 16.
To be fair to the authors, these errors have now been corrected in the errata, and I haven't looked at earlier chapters of the book, which may be better than the chapters I did look at.

With a clear writing style and matter-of-fact approach, this rigorous yet accessible introduction to quantum computing is designed for readers with a solid mathematical background but limited knowledge of physics and quantum mechanics. Using a methodical approach and an abundance of worked examples, this handbook delivers a thorough introduction to the quantum circuit model, including the mathematical formalism required for quantum computing. Concentrates on the quantum circuit model to make complex subject matter more accessible. Provides a phenomenological introduction to quantum computing, encouraging readers to view the subject as a fundamentally new approach to computing. Detailed presentation of quantum algorithms demonstrates the logic behind the development of Deutsch's problem, quantum Fourier transform, Shor's factoring algorithm, Simon's algorithm for phase estimation, and discrete logarithms evaluation problems. For anyone interested in learning more about quantum computing.

Linear Algebra with Applications, Study Guide Review

Linear Algebra with Applications, Study Guide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a good linear algebra book for those who are a little bit more advanced, and who have a good background in the language of mathematics.
This book has a theoretical emphasis rather than applicable on a chapter to chapter basis even thought that it is title with applications because it does contain applications of the theory in every chapters, actually it contains lots of applications, but the actual teaching of the theory is more theoretical than other books. Is a very good book, but if you are buying a book to learn the basics of linear algebra this one might be a little confusing for the reader that does not contain a solid math background.
In other words it is a book written for students with a little bit more mathematical maturity. perhaps for students at the junior level of a mathematical bachelor, rather than for the engineers.
But it is a great book with "proofs" and "applications" is great.

This is a very good book. The authors focus very well on the audience they are trying to commuinicate with and they have plenty of well thought out examples. The book is easy to read and has a nice selection of topics. This would make a good textbook or a nice reference. The book does lack much of the mathematical development, but that really isn't the driving force for the text. If you are interested in just the how to's and not really the why then this is a great book for you.

Principles of Mathematical Problem Solving Review

Principles of Mathematical Problem Solving
Average Reviews:

Like Larson's book, "Problem Solving Through Problems", this is a textbook aimed at preparing students for mathematics contests such as the annual Putnam Competition. It will probably also be of interest to high school students preparing for some of the higher level contests such as the AIME, USAMO, and the international olympiad. The text consists of a large collection of problems, along with many solutions. There's little here on heuristics for problem solving. Instead, the book focuses on bits of mathematical theory that often come up in solving such problems but may not often come up in the undergraduate curriculum ( things like Jensen's inequality, the pigeonhole principle, etc.) Larson's "Problem Solving Through Problems" is similar in style and content. For more on problem solving heuristics, see Polya's "Mathematical Discovery" or "Thinking Mathematically" by Mason, Burton, and Stacey.

This book presents the principles and specific problem-solving methods that can be used to solve a variety of mathematical problems. The book provides clear examples of various problem-solving methods accompanied by numerous exercises and their solutions. Principles of Mathematical Problem Solving introduces and explains specific problem-solving methods (with examples), and gives a set of exercises and complete solutions for each method. The idea is that by studying the principles and applying them to the exercises, the reader will gain problem-solving ability as well as general mathematical insight. Eventually, the reader should be able to produce results that have "the whole air of intuition." Organized according to specific techniques in separate chapters, techniques include induction and the pigeonhole principle, among others. Arranged in order of increasing difficulty, the book presents a wide variety of problem sets designed to illustrate significant mathematical ideas. Each chapter also includes a moderate amount of the "theory" behind each problem-solving principle it presents. An essential resource for every student of mathematics and every professional who needs to solve mathematical problems.
