Op-Amps and Linear Integrated Circuits (4th Edition) Review

Op-Amps and Linear Integrated Circuits (4th Edition)
Average Reviews:

The prose explanations are short and stilted, offering a minimun of circuit operational explanation. When the author reaches what I entrepet as writer's block, he refers the reader to an equation which is lenghty and difficult to understand. The equations often lack explanations as to how they are derived. They also lack explanations of what the new symbols in them represent. They would be much easier to understand if there was more prose explanation of how the equations were created and then how the equations were changed into simpler equations for solving. This appears to be a good reference for experienced engineers. It is not a good study text for newly learning students.

Becoming an Electronics Technician: Securing Your High-Tech Future (4th Edition) Review

Becoming an Electronics Technician: Securing Your High-Tech Future (4th Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Becoming an Electronics Technician" contains everything you need to determine if being an electronics technician is for you and how best to go about learning how to be an electronics technician.
The book begins by covering what it means to be an electronics technician. This section describes the wide variety of work electronics technicians do, from medical electronics to industrial electronics and communications electronics to computer electronics and much more. Each of these different fields offer their own challenges and opportunities for excellent careers. The book continues with an overview of today's electronics workplace and look into the future, as well a review of what electronics technicians need to know to succeed. The introductory section closes with profiles of five actual electronics technicians, describing the kinds of challenges each faces.
The second section of the book discusses how to become an electronics technician. The various ways of gaining the required education are reviewed, followed by strategies for making the most of your classroom experience and things you can do beyond the classroom to prepare you to succeed as an electronics technician. There is an excellent discussion of the value of technician certifications and an entire chapter on information technology certifications, with emphasis on the A+ Certification. The section wraps up with advice on finding, getting, and keeping that important first electronics technician position.
The final section of "Becoming an Electronics Technician" introduces the reader to the electronics field. Starting with a discussion of the various methods of 'breadboarding' electronics circuits; a crucial step in learning how the circuits used in electronics devices work. The book continues with tips on troubleshooting circuits, information on how various electronic transducers work, and a short course on solid-state electronic components. There's an excellent chapter on electronics safety, from electrical shock to hazards from electronics tools and chemicals commonly used in electronics. In addition to a short discussion on surface mount technology and a wide range of electronics projects, the book contains an excellent review of circuit simulation software.
The author, Ronald A. Reis, teaches electronics at Los Angeles Valley College. He wrote the first edition of "Becoming an Electronics Technology" in 1993 and has updated it every few years as the electronics industry and economy has changed. The book is written in an engaging and clear style that makes it easy to understand.
Each chapter includes review questions, individual or group activities, and issue for class discussion. This gives the student a quick way to reinforce the material in the book and to delve further into the matters covered. Also, for those considering using this book for an introductory course on electronics, there is an instructor's manual.
All in all, this is an excellent book that does an outstanding job of helping one understand what the electronics technician profession is (and isn't). I strongly recommend this book for anyone interested in learning about the electronics and trying to determine if being an electronics technician might be for them.

This is a great book. I am presently one of Jacobs' students and he is the best professor i have ever had. His reading material in this book is easy to read and very interesting. Most technical books are boring and hard to understand, but not this one. His teaching style is integrated in this book with excitement and wonderful theory. This book explains the OP AMP in detail along with power supplies, layout procedures, waveform generators, filters, non-linear circuits, and many more great concepts. Even if you are not taking the course, the book is an excellent reference.

Mechatronics: A Multidisciplinary Approach (4th Edition) Review

Mechatronics: A Multidisciplinary Approach (4th Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I think it would be impossible to cover the field of mechatronics in under six-hundred pages, although Bolton sure seems to come close. He covers a very decent spread of topics, providing basic concepts and equations, but no theory. You can probably gauge the depth with which topics are covered by looking over the contents of the book:
Sensors and Transducers, Signal Conditioning, Digital Signals, Digital Logic, Data Presentation Systems, Actuation Systems (Pneumatic, Hydraulic, Mechanical and Electrical), System Models, Dynamic Responses of Systems, System Transfer Functions, Frequency Response, Closed-Loop Controllers, Artificial Intelligence, Microprocessors, Programming (C and Assembly), Input/Output Systems, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), Communication Systems, Fault Finding, and even a review of Laplace Transforms and an introduction to MATLAB.
That's a lot of material for six hundred pages. And although some areas are skimmed over at frustratingly little depth, the sheer volume of good information makes this book an ideal reference. It certainly beats carrying around a dozen other books, and probably does just as good. Frankly, this book makes me want to sell back most (but not quite all) of my college textbooks which I kept as references.
One caveat, however, is that some sections seem to be good only as a tutorial. For example, the chapter on Data Presentation Systems is comprised almost entirely of concepts, and I don't see it having much reference value. While I doubt a reference for these systems could be written--that is, without covering specific models--some might only see it as extra weight. Still, I'm glad that Bolton included it, as it does its part to complete the picture.
Ultimately, I think almost anyone would benefit from this book. While I will be using it mostly as a reference (although there are areas from which I fully intend to learn new information), I believe it would also serve as an excellent start for anyone interested or otherwise engaged in the field, as an engineer, a technician, a hobbyist, or simply an admirer or enthusiast.

The book is beginner to intermediate level. It does a good job of descibing how the processor process information, decribes memory mapping vs I/O mapping with some good hardware examples to cover both. I use it a lot for reference. Covers the no-man land between soft and hardware well. All software is in assembly (off course).
