Women's Health Case Studies Review

This is one of three review books I have found for preparing for the WHNP exam. What I really liked about this review book was the case study format. The short scenarios give enough information to make you think, but not so much as to make the answer a "gimme". The rational for each answer not only explaions the correct answer, but also explains why the other options are incorrect. I have learned a great deal from this text!

Designed to help nurse practitioners prepare for the women's health certification exam, this text uses a case approach to mimic the actual exam. This review book offers twice as many questions as encountered on the actual exam and includes answers with rationales which explain correct answers. An accompanying computer disk also provides cases and questions. As a nursing instructor I highly recommend this book to my students. Nursing students have very little spare time to spend sorting through a textbook looking for "important" information. This book takes all of the guesswork out of reading the text. My suggestion is to read your textbook but study from this book and then refer to the text for further clarification if neccessary.

As a first year RN student, writing care plans was difficult. This book makes it so easy! It gives you the description of the disease, the etiology and pathophysiology, assessment, priority nursing diagnosis, planning and implementation, client teaching/education, expected outcomes and evaluations and medication information. At the beginning of each chapter are objectives, a pretest, an overview of anatomy and physiology of the system, diagnostic tests and measurements, common nursing techniques and procedures and nursing management of the client who is having/had surgery. The chapters conclude with a case study and a posttest. Both pre and posttests come with answers and rationals, which I find extremely helpful in understanding why you would do this but not that. Online help is also available but I have not used it or the cd which comes with it. One final note, Gulanick/Myers Nursing Care Plans (6th Edition) is another fantastic book for care plans! Hope this helps!

I highly recommend this book! I bought several other review books such as Concise Review, and this book has more detail than any of the others. It has 1000's of questions, but what is most helpful is the DETAILED description of the answers. They were so thorough that by diligently studying and outlining their answers you will learn a tremendous amount.

As much as I love my psych text book, I found this book to be very helpful as a Cliff Notes-type supplement. It is concise and easy to read, and the CD that goes along with it works in my Mac and is totally awesome! You can go through pre and post test questions on line, just like within the chapters, as well as check out some NCLEX stuff. All of this was very helpful for exams and just plain learning.
Love it and highly recommend it for supplementing your studies!!

This is a book on nutrition all Nursing students need a good reference book on nutrition. I wish someone would have told me my first semester. ALL NURSING STUDENTS GET SOME TYPE OF NUTRITION BOOK IF NOT THIS ONE ANOTHER ONE. Nutritional information can and will be very helpful for you at test taking time. Many schools are now incorporating nutrition based questions on test especially community colleges who do not require students to take a Nutrition class. Nutrition is very important in Nursing for teaching patients as well establishing a plan of care and Nursing diagnosis.

My Nursing Instructor initially recommended this book last semester and now it is part of the required books for this semester. It is an excellent study guide and helped me get a high grade in Adults Health II. I learned a lot from it and will use it to study for NCLEX. Saunders NCLEX study guide is good also.

Clearly separating the overwhelming array of medical-surgical nursing content into manageable sections as they are taught and tested, Med-Surg Success provides core medical-surgical concepts with related NCLEX-style questions. Like the NCLEX itself, the questions are presented at the application and analysis level, and address the nursing process, management, prioritizing, and medications: critical thinking and how it relates to test taking is emphasized throughout. Organized by body system and specific diseases, Med-Surg Success builds on the successful skills and strategies that have already helped thousands of students in Fundamentals Success and Test Success . The disorders chapters provide practice questions focused on the disease process and a comprehensive exam that includes the processes covered in the practice questions along with other topics involving the system addressed. Other chapters similarly cover emergency, perioperative, and cultural nursing; alternative health care and end-of-life issues; and the last chapter before the comprehensive final exam includes questions and test-taking hints specific to pharmacology and the administration of medications. Pharmacology: Reviews and Rationales (Prentice Hall Nursing Reviews & Rationales Series) Review

Pharmacology: Reviews and Rationales (Prentice Hall Nursing Reviews and Rationales Series)
Average Reviews:

I have always really enjoyed the Review & Rationale series but this was the first book that fell a little short for me. I am not giving this book a bad review because it is a good book; it is organized, clear, and easy to understand. This book probably would have been more helpful to me when I was in nursing 101 or Med/Surg. I purchased this book during my final semester in nursing school while taking a critical care class. Most of the medications I learned about in critical care were not covered in this book which I didn't realize when I made the purchase. I spoke with another nursing student in my class who also has this book and she agreed: OK book but not a favorite. I don't exactly know why but I always reach for other references first before looking at this book. Perhaps one should look through a copy of this book before buying it to make sure it fits your specific needs.

Prentice Hall's Reviews & Rationales: Comprehensive NCLEX-RN(R) Review Review

Prentice Hall's Reviews and Rationales: Comprehensive NCLEX-RN(R) Review
Average Reviews:

I have 8 NCLEX-RN review books and this is my favorite. This is a very comprehensive review of what they taught in Nursing school, so it seems overwhelming at first. But, it has a great feature--the content that shows up in NCLEX tests most often is highlighted with an exclamation point in the margin. So, you can review the content with the exclamation points and feel fairly confident that you're studying what usually shows up on the test. This is also a great book to have while in school. For example, after you study Cardiovascular disorders in theory, you can review the Cardio disorder chapter and the Cardio pharmacology chapter. Each chapter has a section of NCLEX-style questions with rationales, so you get good experience answering NCLEX-style questions while you're in school. There is a separate section of pharmacological and parenteral therapies that is wonderful. If you just need to brush-up on meds, you can go to this section. Some of the pharmacology chapters are: Dosage Calculations, Peds Dosage calculations, IV therapy, Blood Therapy, TPN, Maternal and newborn meds., psychiatric meds., respiratory meds., Cardio meds., etc. I've read that NCLEX tests ask more pharmacology questions now, so I appreciate these medication-specific chapters. The tables and charts are also very concise and complete. All-in-all, this book was easy to read and has everything (content-wise) that you need. I haven't taken the NCLEX-RN test yet, but did well on the HESI predictor test that they made us take right before graduation. I know that as a nurse, I will also use this Reviews and Rationales book to review content that I'm starting to forget. Definitely worth the money--probably the best Nursing book I've bought.

Comparative Politics: An Introduction to Seven Countries (4th Edition) Review

Comparative Politics: An Introduction to Seven Countries (4th Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is exactly what the subtitle says: an intro to seven countries. It is not exactly a book on comparative politics, although that's the course where it would be used. It devotes about 70(!) pages to each of the countries. Given the standard size type and almost total lack of pictures or feature boxes, the reader gets a LOT of info. It can be difficult to trudge through but it's a good resource.
One thing that would make this book better (though substantially longer) is introductory chapters explaining the characteristics of the three major types of countries. For a text which does a far better job in that area, pick up Charles Hauss' book on Comparative Politics.
