I actually read a lot of reviews on this particular item, and everyone that was selling this book used was saying that their book had bent pages, and writing in it, and their prices were not right either. I found this book used and bought it from text books r us who amazon had listed selling this book. I recieved this book and it is actually in great condition as it was brand new, but I have noticed that all used books that I buy from actually are in great condition.

The Middle East and Central Asia: An Anthropological Approach (4th Edition) Review

The Middle East and Central Asia: An Anthropological Approach (4th Edition)

This book is quite dense. It makes for slow and contemplative reading. As a review of the anthropological literature of the Middle East, it should be a required text for any graduate or upper level undergraduate social sciences course focussing on the Middle East or Central Asia. Original source material is summarized and analyzed in comparison to other viewpoints, particularly across time. Anyone with further interest in particular areas of culture could skim the footnotes to find the complete citations for the original material. Each chapter also concludes with an annotated list of further readings, which would also be quite useful for the interested reader. My favorite sections were the second chapter, Intellectual Predecessors: East and West, and the last part of the last chapter, Writing Middle Eastern Anthropology.

The volume provides an anthropological introduction to the Middle East, and Central Asia including region, economy, and society, personal and family relationships, change in practical ideologies, the cultural order of complex societies, religion and experience and the shape of change. Women Artists in History: From Antiquity to the Present Review

Women Artists in History: From Antiquity to the Present

Wendy Slatkin has produced an introduction to a subject which deserves a more indepth study. She offers a outline of women artists and their work that is, however, suitable for a beginning class of Art History students. It crys out for a broader scope and more detailed research, particularily in the area of 20th Century artists. It is, in this sense, an inspirational 'textbook'.

This concisely written book introduces readers to the most recent contributions of women to the history of art from the ancient past to the year 2000. It also focuses on the roles of women as patrons and collectors—along with the ways in which women have been represented in imagery in different periods. Organized chronologically of western civilizations and the roles women have played in their visual cultures, it highlights contributions from the Middle Ages to the present. Coverage includes Europe from 1450-1800; 19th Century France, United States and Victorian England; the Post World War II Era; contemporary art; and a conclusion of global issues for women artists: past, present, and future. For artists, and art lovers looking to truly understand and appreciate the outstanding contributions of women to the field.
