Data Communications: From Basics to Broadband (4th Edition) Review

This book covers all the major topics in data communications but does so in a very simplistic manner that barely scratches the surface of any of the topics covered. Of course the breadth of the book is so wide that it would not be possible to cover even a fraction of the topics in any detail. The back of the book says that it is a suitable book for those with a technical background and that the 'shaded areas' go into more technical detail. I found the shaded areas to be just as elementary as the rest of the book, and in many cases doesn't tell the full story. This is a good book if you only want an introduction to telecomm topics, or want a dictionary of telecomm acronyms. It is fairly well written and has some very simplistic analogies for those who might need plain english illustrations of telecomm concepts. The reason I'm giving it a low rating is because I feel the publisher/author is trying to sell this to a technical audience, which I strongly feel it is not suitable for. But if you know nothing about volts, bytes, bits, baud, hertz, etc... then this would be a good place to start.

Human Diseases: A Systemic Approach (7th Edition) Review

I used this text for a pathology undergraduate course, along with a more complex text (Concise Pathology by Lange). The Mulvihill text did not solidify the concepts; rather, it skimmed over the topics in a cursory manner without giving each topic the attention it needs. A good book for someone with little background in the health sciences, but not enough for anyone who needs something more comprehensive. One plus in this book are the charts at the end of each chapter, which categorize diseases by signs and symptoms, treatment, etc.

This book presents the basic principles of human disease, organized by human organ system. It provides practical information for both health career and non-professional readers—unlike other books, which are generally too high level or specialized for this purpose. Newto this edition are:new diagnostic tests and lab procedures; enhanced coverage in treatment and diagnostic sections in disorders to include common treatments and general pharm options; increased coverage of disease statistics, prevalencies, risk factors for diseases and conditions; addition of prevention and aging to Diseases at a Glance table at the end of each chapter; A new page will be added at the end of each chapter which walks the readers through the multimedia resources that are available for each chapter; and much more!
