I first encountered this translation when I was attending college. One day, while eating lunch in the school's cafeteria, I started reading the book. "Oh, I'll read just a few pages before I go to class," I thought.
Well, hours came and went -- when I came up for air, it was closing time and I had spent the entire day reading the story.
I relate the story for a purpose; many people find Greco-Roman literature "inaccessible" or "stale." Many times, the reaction is the fault of the translator. If the translator is a scholar, then one will get an accurate translation, but a dull story. If the translator is a story teller, the story will be lively, but the translation... erratic.
Mr. Humphries' translation is both lively and accurate. I cannot think of a better introduction to Virgil.
